24 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. FASCIST JOURNAL CRITICIZES POPE Declares Pontiff’s Speech on Education of Youth Exceeds Papal Responsibility. By the Associated Press. ROME, May 17.—The newspaper L'Impero. ultra-Fascist organ, vesterday <harply criticized the speech of Pope | Piux XI, in_which he declared that education of the young was the re- sponsibility of the church and not the sfate and that he had no intention to relinquish it. The editorial did not spare its words. 1t declares the sermon poor in ideas, | and as going beyond pontificial reason- ability in representing God on earth. The preaching was said to be farthest | from expressions worthy of the vicar of | Christ. Insist State Recognizes Religion. “We are convinced that the words to the students were pronounced by Pope Ratti (family name of Pope Pius) and | not by the head of Christianity,” the editorial went on. “The Fascist state does not fail to recognize religion and family in the education of the young, but feels constrained to intervene with | the education of Fascist younger citi- zens in order to establish in youth the concept of country with that of church and family.” The editorial also defends Fascism from the charge of training for con- quest. It was written by Emilio Setti- melli, He once was expelled from the Fascist party because of his heated de- fense of his ideas and has fought at least, one duel. besides having given and Teceived several other challenges. Papal Journal's Warning. Osservatore Romano, used by the Vatican for official announcements, in {ts leading article today gives a veiled warning about “illusions” created by the conciliation of church and state. It ob- jects to speaking of Ttalian Catholics as & group apart from the body of Catho- lics. It says the conciliation was ef- fected for the whole of Italy, “because if it is a good thing for the church, it is the same for state and country.” Tn the past year Sumatra has in- creased its rubber shipments to the United States by 3.000,000 pounds, but because of the reduction in prices, the value dropped more than $10,000.000. ELCVENTH ST. Many Uses for Farm Wastes. Government investigators have been giving considerable attention recently to the proposition of making use of the | wastes of the farm, and a considerable degree of success has attended their | efforts, but the commercial utilization of some of these processes at the pres- | ent time is a_questionable matter. No | fewer than 52 products, ranging from | acetic acid to xylose, that can be made from corncobs are listed in the report | and science has evolved 24 products out | of cornstalks | | As nea stalk utilization projects are still in the experimental stage.
