Stricken shortly after dinner, William Goodyear Johnson, native of Washing-! ton and for more than 40 years one of the leading attorneys of the District bar, died suddenly at 8:15 o'clock last hight at his home, 1827 Sixteenth street. | He was 68 years old. | Mr. Johnson apparently was in good | health, for he had spent the afternoon as usual at his office, 719 Fifteenth street, before returning home. He was one of the most prom- inent members of the bar of the United States Supreme Court, the Court of Ap- peals and the District Supreme Court, | and was held in high esteem by the jus- tices of these courts, as by his_ col- leagues of the local bar, for his ability and integrity. Born Here in 1860. Mr. Johnson, born in this city June 8, 1860, resided here all his life. He was graduated from the collegiate depa: ment and law school of Columbian, now | George Washington, University, receiv- ing the degree of bachelor of laws in 1883 and master of laws in 1884 After having studied under Messrs. Johnson & Hanna and serving with the new firm of Johnson & Carlisle, he became, in 1894, partner. under the firm name of Carlisle & Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a professor of law in the Columbian Law School, and also was judge of the moot court and a lec- turer on common law practice before the senior class. He married on April 19, 1892, Miss Mary Anna Moore, daughter of James and Sarah Catherine Moore. Recognized as a leader of the bar for many years, Mr. Johnson, in late years, was the senior of the local bar associa- i sel in famous case: Bank case, Hirsch | versus Block, which involved the con- stitutionality of the Ball rent act, and many others. including the famous Hutchins will case, the Behring Sea arbitration case, and for some years was legal adviser to the British® em= assy.
