Stoddard Addresses Bond Club. An investment trust of managerial | Bon AmiA4).. type is the best qualified agency to| handle the great amounts of money Americans are destined to invest in for- eign enterprises, Lothrop Stoddard, economist, author and member of the advisory board of the Uniteq Invest- ment Assurance System of Boston, told local men in the bond business at a Juncheon sponsored by the Bond Club of Washington and tendered by Found- ers Securities Trust of Boston at the Carlton Hotel yesterday. Speaking on “Europe, America and Our Money,” Mr. Stoddard advocated foreign investment of American money, but only through well informed, estab- lished and intelligent mediums which are equipped to afford greatest possible safety. Factories and mines have broken all production records in the first quar- ter of this year, the Federal Reserve Board announced today. Industrial output, rising rapidly for 15 months, was about 10 per cent larger in the first quarter than in the same period of last vear. Increased demand for bank credit to finance industry and trade has ex- panded commercial loans in leading cities, while security loans and in- vestment holdings of the Federal Re- serve member banks have declined. There was a continuous flow of com- modities through the channels of trade to the consumer, the board's summary continued, and inventories, except in a | few industries, showed no evidence of unusual gro? D. C. Market Highly Selective. Most of the letters sent out by New York brokerage houses these days state that the New York market is highly selective. The same could be sald of today’s session of the Washington Stock Exchange. Trading was so selective that only seven issues appeared on the board. The market, opened with $4.000 Poto- mac Electric Power Consolidated 58 selling at 1011;. The opening stock sale was in Capital Traction, 25 shares | moving at 96!z and 30 shares changing at 961, Potomac Electric Power 6 per cent) preferred opened at 113, and closed at | 113. There was a 25-share transfer in Washington Gas at the recent higher price level of 109';. Federal-American Co. preferred sold at 101'; and a small lot of Mergenthaler Linotype register- ed 107'3. The market closed with 50 shares of Railway & Electric preferred appearing on the board at 97%. Heard in Financial District. Trading Subsides. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, May 15.—For two hours today the Stock Market was strong and active with & number of issues | forging ahead into new high ground.! Then as money tightened the list turned irregular, volume fell off and the trend | became uncertain. [ | | ‘The renewal rate for call loans was 10 per cent, which was the fieure at the close vesterday. In the early after- noon money advanced to 12 per cent, and even then it was in scant supply. At 2 o'clock it went to 15 per cent. | The best that could be said was that | there was no real weakness and that activity decreased on the decline. i Except for Packard, motor shares were heavy in the afternoon, although' they had been uniformly sirong in the | st_half of the session. Rubbers sold off, perhaps in sympathy with the break | in rubber futures. The oils acted dis-| appointingly all day, failing to reflect the favorable dividend news. Utilities came down from their best, but made a good showing. Sentiment in mixed. On the one hand it was admit- ted that the market had shown sur- prising recuperative power, but against was the continued uncertainty of || > credit situation. The market hour confused in the extreme. | Fractional losses were recorded many stocks, perhaps more than show- | ed advances, but the gains were as a cule larger in amount, than the declines. Packard maintained its leadership and sold at a new record high toward the end. Warner Brothers' Pictures was strong and the stock of the public util- ity holding companies held firmly. In general, the list showed its now familigr indifference to high money. MONEY MARKET. NEW YORK, May 15 (P).—Call money | strong: high, 15; low, 10; ruling rate, 10; closing bid. 15.
