32 THE EVENING STAR, TWO FAGE HEARING INJURY BRIBE CASE Juror and Man Alleged to| Have Given Him Cash to “Hang” Body Held. By the Associated Press. ' NASHVILLE, Tenn., May lO.*Th(“ ®tate, twice defeated by “hung” juries in its efforts to convict Walter Liggett | of the slaying of Turney Cunniigham. today turned its attention toward hear- | g ings of contempt proceedings against | two men charged with conspiracy to | “hang” the second jury. | B. P. Osburn, one of the jurors, was | arrested Wednesday on a charge of ac- cepting a bribe from Rainey Creswell, who admitted Liggett offered him $200 to “fix” Osburn. Attorney General Richard M Atkin- | son plans to present what he terms *“ad- ditional evidence” in the case obtained in a statement by Ben Osburn, the ! juror's son. The statement said young | Osburn’s father told him he had been | summoned to serve on the Liggett jury | “but he didn't believe there was enough | money in it.” Later he said his mother told him Creswell had been to see Os- burn and that he was going to get more money out of the jury duty. When he attended a_session of the | court, the youth said, Creswell advised him not to sit near Liggett, or be seen with him, “as he was known to Attor- | ney General Atkinson and that some | one might suspect something.” Cunningham, a hotel manager, was shot to death by Liggett, a young grain | dealer, last Fall in the rear yard of the | former’s home. Liggett's counsel claimed self-defense. Liggett admitted an af- | Tair of several years standing with Mrs, } Cunningham. Liggett was remanded to jail after the arrest of Osburn and Creswell by | Judge Chester K. Hart, presiding over | Davidson County court, who revoked his bond of $25,000. | MANY EXAMINATIONS FOR U. S.
