ALABAMA WOMEN WILL FIGHT HEFLIN Plans for Campaign Over| State to Defeat Him ‘ Are Formulated. By the Assoclated Press. BIRMINGHAM., Ala., April 27— Plans for an active campaign in the State to bring about the defeat of| United States Senator J. Thomas Heflin in the 1930 election, are being formu- lated at headquarters here of the Ala bama Woman's League for White Su. premacy, Mrs. Mabel Jones West, the league president, announced yesterday in making public a resolution of apol- i i for Heflin's campaign against the Cath- olic Church. The resolution adopted by the execu- | tive board of the league “deplores his | (Heflin’s) foolish and fanatical assaults | upon those of our fellow citizens who | are members of the Catholic Church.” | | The resolution continued that “the lack of patriotism and dark designs upon the liberties of the country, which seem to be attributed to Catholics by the Senator, and which apparently fill him | with fear and dismay, are not shared by the majority of the people of Ala- bama. We repudiate Senator Heflin as our representative in any sense.” Claims 30,000 Membership. Mrs. West, who claims a membership of over 30,000 for the league, declared the resolution is being circulated with to be sent Senator Willlam E. requesting that it be read on the Senate floor. She said the campaign under way against Senator Heflin will be carried into the most remote hamlet in the State.
