THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTO: D. C APRIL 28, 1929—SPORTS SECTIO Voltear Victor in $10,000 Chesapeake : Ben Ali Handicap Captured by Broadszde DOZEN PREAKNESS ELIGIBLES BEATEN Grey Coat Is Second and The Nut Is Third in Havre de Grace’s Final Feature. Special Dispateh to The Star. AVRE DE GRACE, Md, April 27.—The $10,000 Chesapeake Stakes, which attracted a field of 13 3-year-olds, went to the Dixiana Stable’s Voltear, which was making his first start since the Coffroth Handicap. Samuel Ross' Grey Coat was second and the Warm Stable’s ‘The Nut managed to get up to take the third money from the Rancocas Stable’s Leucite. The race was a disappointing one fran several angles. It is considered a stepping stone for the Preakness, but the winner was the only horse in the race that is not eligible for the Pimlico classic. It was a perfect day for the running of the final program of the meeting. ‘The weather conditions were excellent and more than 15,000 turned out for the sport. The start in the Chesapeake was a r one. Singlestep and Constitution ept breaking through the barrier, and when the field was finally turned loose neither of these was away well. matter of fact Constitution's chances were ruined at the break and he was & traller to the first turn. My Sis Gets Off First. My Sis was quickest to the first turn and she led for almost three-quarters of a mile. Rubicon and Leucite were in closest pursuit of her. Rubicon, however, met with interference on the turn and was pulled up. It was at this point that Voltear, which had been racing in & contending position, moved up and took command to win well in hand. Grey Coat slipped through on the inside turning for home and had no | trouble placing, but The Nut, which ap- red sore-going to the paddock, was 53?:.. his best to take the third money from Leucite. 2 Dr. Freeland, well backed and con- sidered one of the strongest candidates for the Preakness, was among the starters. He was in a contending posi- tion on the back stretch and apparently had no excuses. Mulmlh showed the fastest 6 fur- the meeting in winning the Gnenwlch Handicap in 1:12 flat. 3-year-old daughter of Cudgel tnd Waterblossom had to run that fast, however, as she beat The Heathen only by the scantiest of margins. Combs' Broadside, a 5-year-old son | of Man o' War, won the Ben Al Handicap, the feature of the day's second and Devon third and Broadside negotiated it in 1:45.| The race was worth $3,200 winther. Broadside, fast breaker, was away hailf mile. He then moved up steadily | from fifth position and, continuing | well through stretch, held Cartago safe to win in a drive by a nose. Cartago, off slowly, was forced very wide on the last turn, but came strongly in_the last sixteenth and gradually was wear: ing down the winner. He secured thg place money by three lengths over | Devon Nine started and the victor paid| $7.46 to win in the mutuels. Shasta Lad won the eixth, the sec- ondary feature, with Cash Play second and Reveries Gal third. Shaesta Lad raced under stout restraint to the turn, where he responded gamely and co; tinued to win by & head. Cash Play was a forward factor from the start and closed stoutly in the stretch to take the place only by a mnose over Reveries Gal. The winner paid $4.10. Tannic won the opening event, com- ing from the rear in the streteh, and, overtaking Little Torch, gradually wore the latter down. Little Torch held sec- ond place safe over Anita M, which was hard hustled throughout, but tired in the last 70 vards. The favorite players continued in good form in the second race, when Roll 'Em Down won easily. Rip Fleld took second and Col. Henry third. Louisville Lou moved up stoutly after the first quarter to win the third race. She rewarded at the julcy odds of $28.50. Margate took second money and ‘Tum On saved third. WILD APPLE, a 2 colt that has nhr‘a n | some very encouraging races in his ¢ fow sram should h.lve] no ‘troublt g:l;iq; ing in the first. Almost any on \is ragcs repeated would do it. FROCK n2s threatened in both her races. Hard | capable of holdlna‘l the top ome, bu should again be the main contender. NOTUS flashed some speed in the South. Said to be a fair sort. break into the money. CROSSCO has been dropped into a gne spot in the second. This mare has on his toes, but was outrun in the first | been whipping far better than these in her recent races. Believe she needs only a steadying ride to repeat in the second. | MINT FRIARY displayed several fine | races- toward the end of last season. | she appeared to e a filly that would improve in her 3-year-old form. If she has continued to grow speedy over the Winter she may make the race in- | teresting. The dangerous _contender AFRICAN is another youngster that gave us some promising efforts last year. Hard to rate him here, but he belongs with the leaders. A chance. | At the route VACILLATE should never be in danger in the third. Has won her last two at Havre de Grace from as good as these, and with her tremendous early speed, she should merely gallop home. Looks much the best. ALWINOTON DOLLY is improv- ing with each start. Hardly likely that | she can catch the top one at the route, but_her last two make her menacing. ATTAMART is finding her racing legs Closed an immense gap behind VACIL- LATE last time. With a faster break | she might split the top pair. VICTORIAN has lhown. both in his recent race and fn some very fast trials. that he is at top form. PETEE wnAcx has always been a troublesome horse for the top one. Petee scored over good ones in his one start of the year. | Continues to show high speed in works, and is all over the one to beat. Over a muddy track he might take the meas- ure of the top one. DISPLAY usually um some time to race himself into shape.
