Detectives sald that the | operations of the pair had cost bank depositors, of this city more’than $4,000 in less than a year, ‘The arrested men, John Hyde Fowler, 57, a chef by occupation, and Thomas Nelson McCoo, 21 years old, said they lived in the 1200 block of T street. ‘They are charged with fargery. According to police the men would steal bank statements from letter boxes in uptown apartment houses, get the canceled checks and forge the signa- tures of the depositors. McCoo, police said, under a “working” arrangement between the two men, would steal the statements, and Fowler, referred to by police as “an expert penman,” would write the checks. The alleged forgery, police said, was genuine enough to in- ! sure success on almost every attempt. The alleged forged checks, police said, would range from $60 to $90 each.
