38 SANDERS LEADS " DN T Coolidge Secretary Will Press Claim for $17,000,000 Held Due From U. S. By the Associated Press, HAVRE, Mont, April 5.—Everett Sanders, secretary. to the President dur- ing the Coolidge administration, will lead the fight of the Assiniboine In- dians of Montana to recover $17,000,000 t.heyt claim from the Federal Govern- ment. Three representatives of the tribe from the Fort Belknap and Fort Peck reservation appeared before Judge C. B. Elwell in District Court here yesterday to sign the contract with Sanders. The claim represents the value placed upon land the Indians assert was grant- ed them under a treaty of 1851, but which was never received. The tract lies between the Yellowstone and Mis- souri Rivers, west of the Musselshell, in Central Montana. The Government claims the grant was extinguished by a later treaty, but the Indian leaders as- sert that the later treaty never was ratified and insist that the grant still is valid. The Indians are represented by the law firm of Davis, James and Beebe. James W. Good, Secretary of War, was their representative until he became a member of the Hoover cabinet. Sanders succet him.
