[§ TAPPED BY POLICE Underground Brewery, Capa- i .ble of Producing 500 Bar- ¥ rels Daily, Discovered. @7 the Associated Press. DETROIT, April 5—The spell of the Yukon gripped st.. Aubin avenue yes- smuc Federal miners swung plr.h Policemen swung mighty sl vast audience circled the labor! ex- cavators. Those who weren't in the street sat upon their window sills. Au- $hority sweated for 10 hours. At the end of that time the miners trawled on their stomachs in the mud through a secret door which bore every resemblance to a solid brick wall. In- side they found a subterranean brewery caj nble of producing 500 barrels of beer T “strike” was made by two patrol- §nen, “prospecting” in an alley off St. Aubin avenue. Snugly ensconced on the seat of a huge tank wagon, such as is used for oil, the two saw a sleeping driver. Sergt. Clayton Williams idly turned a spigot. “It Is Beer,” Sergeant Says. “Hm-m.m,” sald Sel ‘Williams. #Looks like beer.” He smelled the flui *Well,” he said, “it smeun like bee: He tasted a bit, “Good,” he added, tastes like beer.” “It is beer,” said Sergt. Williams Positively, and he so reported. Inside the garage, behind which the tank wagon was parked, prohibition agents and police found two pipe lines that ran somewhere. Where they led, the officers started out to learn this morning. The exploration consumed about nine hours. Around noon the trail led .definitely toward a vacant house. The miners quit digging and marched thereto. Inside they found only a pile of bricks and a freshly bricked-in stair case. After several hours of hammer- ing a hole was dug through the two- foot thick wall. Inside was the brewery. Family of Four Held. After another hour of exploration the officers found a section of the brick wall which swung on hinges. They walked through the exit thus offered and found themselves in a Mrs. Caspara Taormini and two sons, who operate the store, pleaded igno- yance, but were held. Likewise, Caspara ‘Taormini, the husband and father, was detained when it was found he operated 2 meat shop on the other side of the brewery. Apparently the plant had run since May, 1928, the date of the lease. Fed- eral agents said it probably élld sup- plied a large section of the Middle West with “Canadian” beer. MRS.
