DOUBLE SLAYING LAID TO RUM WAR {Two Shot Down in Hlinois as Revenge Move, County Officials Believe. By the Associated Press. WILSONVILLE, I, April 1.—Rum rivalry was advanced by county au- thorities today as a motive for the slay- ing here yesterday afternoon of Frank Hines, 28, and his brother-in-law, Smith Tucker, 27, Wilsonville miners. The two men were shot to death as thev drove into Wilsonville by an auto- miobile load of men, who apparently had followed them from Gillespie, a nearby mining town. After the shoot- ing the slayers whirled their car around and escaped in the same direction from which they came. Three schoolboys saw the shooting, but were unable to tell how many men were in the death car. The slayers drove up behind Hines and Tucker and shouted to them to stop. Hines got out and started toward the other car, a sedan, when two men alighted and be- g"m firing. Hines fell and the men turned their fire on Tucker. Hines was wounded eight and Tucker four times. Sheriff Stubblefield said Hines was under bond on several auto theft and hold-up ,charges and was suspected of bootlegging and hijacking activities. Tucker had no police record. Stubblefield said Hines had been ar- rested in connection with the hijacking of a truckload of liquor near here last Christmas eve and expressed belief that the killings might have been in reprisal for this theft.
