While Farmer Brown's Boy and Farmer Brown and Mother Brown slept efully, thieves were busy in the enhouse. There were two of them. Out in the road was an automobile parked a safe distance away. These thieves had had much experience in stealing chickens and knew just how to go about it. They knew that Bowser the Hound was off hunting Reddy Fox, go they felt sure they could work un- molested. It looked very much as if Farmer Brown's Boy would lose all his hens. Yes, sir. it looked very much as if he would lose all his hens, and they were very choice hens. And Jimmy had brought his little scent- gun into use. That man gave a chuking gasp and started to run. He stumbled | and fell heavily and gave vent to a smothered exclamation. ‘The man inside the henhouse did not, of course, know what had happened. He heard the other man’s fall and ex- clamation, and then he heard the sound of his running feet. Of course, he dropped everything, for his first thought was that they had been discovered. He bolted out of the henhouse door. “Phew!"” he exclaimed, for Jismy Skunk’s_scent nearly took his breath away. Then he plunged for the hen- yard gate. It had swung to. He threw it open with a bang and plunged out to follow his companion. Now it just happened that Jimmy Skunk, Who| through it all had been quite undis- turbed, had moved forward so that as the second thief started to run, he was without knowing it, running straight toward Jimmy. Once more Jimmy brought that little scent-gun into play. Then he calmly turned and walked over to examine the bag of mens. Meanwhile, the two thieves, choking and gasping. stumbled toward their waiting automobile. - There would be no more stealing of chickens that night. Of course, the second thief blamed the first thief. “Couldn’t you see that Skunk when you went out there?” he de- manded. “Didn't you know enough to leave him alone? ¥ou must have fright- ened him, or he wouldn’t have used his scent. Say, this is terrible! We'll have to get out of here and get a long dis- tance away, or theyll find us by the scent.” In the meantime the chickens had | wakened when the second thief had dropped the bag, and there was a great squawking and cackling going on in the together, it was enough to arouse the whole neighborhood. Farmer Brown's Boy jumped out of bed and threw up his window. “Phew!” he exclaimed. | “Jimmy Skunk must be in among the hens this time.
