22 THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., MARCH 24, 1929— PART 1. PRECEDENT SET BY “FIRST LADY" Mrs. Hoover Makes Speech, in White House to Geo- logicgl Delegates. BY FREDERIC WILLIAM WILE. Mrs, Herbert Hoover has just estab- lished a White House precedent, be- lieved to be unique in the history of the Executive Mansion. livered an address there to a great gathering of geologists, assembled in ‘Washington for‘the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the United Btates Geological Sufvey. ‘The First Lady of the Land spoke as a geologist to geologists. An alumna of Stanford University, where she majored in geology, Mrs. Hoover studied under the celebrated Californian geolo- | gist, Dr. John Casper Branner. Branner also was President Hoover's teacher, both in geology and paleontology, the twin branches which were the founda- tion of his engineering career. Friends say that the President con- siders Branner the principal influence in shaping his future destinles. It was on Thursday noon, March 21, that the men and women who came to ‘Washington for the goiden jubllee of the Geological Survey, assembled in the east room of the White House. They had expected a more or less formal reception at Mrs. Hoover's hands. To their surprise and delight, she took occasion to substitute some impromptu remarks. The following is not a full verbatim account of what Mrs. Hoover said. but it is an accurate summary of it. She spoke for some- thing like four or five minutes. Her visitors, who numbered 400 or 500, were told that the Pirst Lady felt her- self entirely at home in the company of geologists, because, in & y, she could claim to belong to the fraternity. She referred in terms of great affection to her work at Stanford under Dr. Branner and to the esteem in which both she and President Hoover hold his memory. Experience Is Related. As an indication of her acknowledg- ment that the study of geology today is radically different from what it was in the 90s, when she was at Stanford, Mrs. Hoover narrated an experience of which Dr. Branner spoke a few years ago. A girl student had applied for admission to his geology classes. Some doubt having been expressed as to her ability to “make the grade” the fair co-ed adduced as & plea for her admis- sion the fact that “Lou Henry” (Mrs. Hoover’s maiden name) had once upon & time not only studied with Bran- ner, but scquitted herself famously in geology. “Well,” the professor rejoined, “Lou Henry might have been able to pass an_examination, but I very much doubt whether the Mrs. Herbert Hoover of today could do so!” The First Lady assured her east room audience that she fully realizes her knowledge of their science is hardly up to present-day standards. ‘Thereupon, while disclaiming any right to be considered as possessing any expert acquaintance with geology of today, Mrs. Hoover declared that she nevertheless retains the liveliest inter- est in her one-time college specialty, and always would do so. The President’s wife expressed a desire to greet per- sonally her “brother and sister geolog: ists,” but a luncheon engagement, then impending, prevented. So standing on an improvised platform in the east room, where she could be seen by every- o . Hoover said she would ex- tend a “Chinese handshake,” which consists of wringing one’s hands in a fervent clasp. This the First Lady pro- ceeded to do amid enthusiastic applause and mingled laughter. With Husband in Ventures. As nearly everybody knows, Mrs. Hoover was the of her dis- tinguish ed husband in all of his early ventures at home and abroad, soon after their graduation from Stan. ford University. Continuing with his statement he said: “For a number of years I suffered with wrfigpntlm and the laxatives I used gave me no relief to speak of. The polson that failed to off as it should have done upset my entire system and I hardly ever felt well; seemed as though I was always tired, worn out and never felt like my old self. I would have severe attacks of headaches that made me sick All over; would have dizzy spells and was so nervous and restless that I could not sleep or rest after going to bed. My food did not digest properly; was always troubled with gas, also indigestion pains and very few things I ate seemed to agree with me. I trled various medicines and remedies, but nothing helped me like Miller's Herb Extract, and I can truthfully say that since 1 have used two bottles of this grand remedy I feel 100 per cent better in every way. I am no longer constipated, and since the bowels have begun to move more regular I have improved in every way; food no longer causes gas to form. I have a wonderful appetite and rest well after going to bed. I am no longer troubled with those sick headaches or dizzy spells and have gained wonderfully in strength and energy. Miller's Herb Extract is one medicine that puts a person in good order in a very short time and friends I have recommended it to say that they have also had wonderful results with it In a very short time. As I said before, it has proven to be the best cleanser and builder I have ever used, and as such I recommend it to every one.” You don't need any pills with this medicine; it's a real | medicine, which is self-guaranteed to give results.
