In a few min- utes it was or?en and he had drawn himself up onto the flat, lead-covered ToOf. e stepped cautiously around a chimney stack and then: “Hands up!” called & voice, and in the light of his flash lamp he saw an oveicoated man, and remembered that Willitt had told him that a guard had been set on the roof. “Are you Willitt's man?” he shouted. “Yes, sir.” “I'm Capt. Shannon, from headquar- ters. Have you seen anybody pass here?" “No, sir.” “Are you sure?” asked Dick incredu- lously. “Absolutely sure, sir. I heard a noise of somebody walking before I heard the skylight break—I suppose it was the skyl'ght—but that came from the other end of the roof.” Dick hurried away beyond the open- ing, taking the ogpoflh direction, un- til he was brought to a standstill by the wall of the next house, which was a story higher than 551. He threw a ray up to the coping. It was impossible that anybody could have climbed that bare face. And then he saw, hanging over the low parapet which inclosed the rear of the roof, a knotted rope, its end se- cured around a chimney stack. He peered down into the darkness. “If the fellow went that way he cer- tainly moved,” he said, and went back to interview the sentinel. The man said he had heard nothing except a sound which might have been the skylight being opened, and there had been no violent nolse of breakage until Dick's crowbar had got busy. “You're an American?” said S8hannon suddenly. “Yes, sir, I'm an American,” said the man. “I've been doing this kind of work on the other side.” There must be some other hiding place on the roof, but though Dick spent a quarter of an hour prying and peering, even hammering at the solid Dbrick chimney stack, he found no place of concealment. He lowered himself down to the little room, leaving Steel to com- plete the investigation. Steel's search was leisurely but thor- ough. With the ald of his hand lamp he began a systematic examination of the lead. His first discovery was a small brass cylinder, obviously an automatic shell and one recently discharged. The second. and the more important, find did not appear until he had almost given up the search. It lay in a little rain gutter running on to the parapet, and it was the glitter of its golden edge that betrayed its presence. He fished it out of the stagnant water and brought it down to the top landing. It was a small gold case and con- tained three sodden cigarettes. In ona corner was an initial. Wiping the case dry, he brought it down to his chief. | Dick 8hannon read the initials. “I think we have the man,” he sald | soberly. Bunny had bought it in Belgium, where purchases are not so carefully registerd. She slipped the gun into her pocket and went up to his room and knocked at the door. “1 am going out for a quarter of an hour,” she said. “All right,” came the muffled reply. She knew a terrace turning out of the Edgware toad. The terrace faced a high wall, behind which ran the Regent Canal, and halfway along the thorough- fare was & flight of iron stairs to a bridge that spanned the water. A taxi dropped her at the foot of the stairs and was dismissed. From the center of the bridge she dropped the pistol and P ard a “smack!” as it struck the thin ce. With shaking hands and eyes that saw mistily through tears, she examined the pistol. The chamber was empty, the magazine that should have filled the butt was missing. THE EVENING STORY Fifty Cents Down. OIS WILSON stood at the kitchen window holding her new electric mixer* and watching the nice young salesman as he disap- peared into the house across the way. Would Mrs. Ellison purchase one also? Lois hoped she would. There would be a certain amount of satisfac- tion in the realization that she was not the only victim on the street. Victim? The word had come unbid- den to her mind. Hadn't she bought the mixer of her own free will> The salesman had been v ? accommodat- ing, to be eure, and had kindly offered to whip up an egg for her when he saw her struggling with her cld-fashioned beater.
