Willard Optimistic on Business. Daniel Willard, president of the Balti- more & Ohio, returning from a trip which took him as far West as Hono- lulu, says that at all points he visited in the United States he found what might be called 2 conservative optimism among business men; certainly he found nowhere any evidence of pessimism. In Chicago, added Mr. Willard, all business men with whom he talked were ‘hopeful concerning business for at least six months of this year. Few cared to venture an opinion beyond that period. ‘The only serious doubt that he heard expressed by anybody was concerning possibilities of the stock market situ- ation. Mr. Willard said he found Baltimore & Ohio business a little better than during the same period last year., al- though not as good as might be desired. Building and Other Notes. ‘Total value of building permits issued in 154 cities in February was $210,- 202435, an increase of 8.2 per cent over January, but a decrease of 19.3 per cent from February, 1928, accord- | ing to Bradstreet's. With the continuing high rate of in- dustrial activity seen in January and February, sales prospects in manufac- turing centers for at least the next six months remain very strong. the Brook- mire Economic Service states in fits latest report on business conditions. ‘The First Wisconsin National Bank of Milwaukee has introduced a so-called automsztic transfer plant, whereby, on arrangement with the depositor, a ftipulated amount is transferred each month from a checking account to a savings account. This saves the deposi- tor a trip to the savings window, and in- sures a regularity in depositing. The Chesapeake & Ohio Railwav in a supplementary application to Inter- state Commerce Commission asks au- thority to use $8.073.023 of proceeds of its recent $24.000,000 bond issue to pay a like amount of its Government promiscory notes instead of using the funds for additions and betterment. Washington, D. C. The Seven Cities of Cibola Francisco de Coronado, grandee of Spain, had a vision of fabulous wealth. Men had told him of streets of gold and towers of jewels in the “Seven Cities of Cibola.” So he led his men to misery and death in the deserts of New Mexico in 1540, re- fusing to helieve that the poor Indian Pueblos he captured were the myth- ical cities. He might have known that fabulous wealth always remains a fable. He and his fellow explorers were like all seekers after easy riches; they lost more than they had hoped to gain. Don’t let your capital perish for the fable of Easy Wealth. Be sure of absolute safety before you invest— look for a record such as that of Swartzell, Rheem & Hensey Com- pany: nearly sixty yvears without loss to an investor. Then invest in the 6 per cent First Mortgage Notes sold by this Company, and be assured of unfailing interest paid twice an- nually. SWARTZELL, RHEEM & HENSEY CO MOLIGNAGE BANKERS 727 15 STREET N.W,.
