e — ; FIN ANCIAL. THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, BONDS SHOW GAN (=== BOND N QUET NARKET Mellon Statement Beflected“ in Better Demand for Standard Issues. BY CUARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 16.—Some re- #uli from the recommendation by Sec- retary Mellon that the purchase of bonds was timely was seen today in | issues on which the return ranges from | 514 10 6 per cent on domestic issues | and from 6!; per cent to 7'2 and 8 per cent on foreign dollar obligations. Obviously the low income returning bonds are still too much in competition ! with money rates, and the taxable bonds | in competition with non-taxable issup.s“ to make it worth while taking them on with the idea of future appreciation. | The convertibles have a market of | their own which is no more related to | money rates than are prices of stock: The recovery in United States Govern. ments is a natural snap back after the severe decline in the second half of last week and the first half of this week. Today's movements indicated the above tendencies in a moderate number of issues. The more quiet conditions in &tocks reduced the volume of trading in | convertibles, whose prices were only | slightly changed. There were fractional advances in the junior rails, but no out- standing feature. Dodge 6s at one time | were up half and then reacted. A fair- Iy active market in Walworth 6's car- red them to about par. Some of the German and French| obligations that had a substantial raily | Priday lost ground, while others made | small gains. BY HARRY H. BECKER. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 16—7Pmflt-f taking, although natural after so violent | an advance as occurred yesterday, held further gains on the Curb Exchange | within more modest proportions today. | Although realizing was not particularly | heavy, the trading element was not disposed to push up their favorites so | aggressively. The only excitement was furnished ! by Ford of Canada, which in response to news of the 20 for 1 split up went to $1.025 a share on the opening sale of 400 shares. This represented an overnight jump of 224 points. This was followed by a sale at $1,150. Irregularity was evident in other re- | cent leaders, more especially those which led the previous upturn. Special de- mand developed for Goldman-Sachs Trading, lifting it Half a dozen points to the highest price so far reached. ‘The best prices in their history were also established by Pond Creek Poca- | hontas Coal, Grigsby-Grunow Radio, i Ground Gripper and Humble Oil. Avi- | ation shares were either unchanged or | slightly lower and the same was true of the mining and utility favorites, with | the exception of American Super- Power A. Among the prominent Industrials to] show gains were Firestone, American | Cyanamid B., Bohn Aluminum, DPPN'! Hazeltine Radio, Transamerica, West- | vaco Chlorine, Trans-Lux and Sparks- Withington. Strength in the oil shares was con- fined to a relatively few of the standard members, although Gulf of Pennsyl- vania spurted rather sharply. Standard was unaffected by the state- ment for 1928 showing net profit after preferred dividends nearly double the 1927 result. Illinois Pipe Line made a { new 1929 top. Further improvement in the copper metal price situation helped most of the producing company shares but gains were fractional. Among the sfocks which moved lower were Kolster Brandes, Gold Seal Elec- tric, Lehigh Coal & Navigation, Tubize Sflk, and Pokker. Washington Stock Exchange SALES. | Barber & Ross 61:5—$2,000 at 9515. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 16.—The trade | reviews issued for this week by Dun and Bradstreet report business in gen- | eral as “fair to good,” and their state- | ments reflect better conditions in most flelds, with steel still setting new records for production. Bradstreet'’s review stated that “the weather this week has improved in a few areas, notably the Southwest and on the Pacific Coast, and in these areas Spring trade has expanded, but in the Central West bad roads, rains, thawing weather and swollen streams have been checks on farm work and country buy- ing, while at the South generaliy, but { particularly in the Southeast, the | weather has been bad and distribution checked. A measure of the quality of the weather this Winter may be had in the returns of bituminous and an- thracite coal production, which for two months have exceeded a year ago by 154 and 234 per cent, Industries Active. “In industrial lines, the steel indus- try and kindred lines, such as auto- mobile, machine tool and agricultural implement manufacturing either main- tain their earlier pace, or in most cases have set up new high records. The activity in all kinds of electrical mate- rial is reflected in still higher prices for copper, which have reached the 20%2- cent mark, with lead also partaking of the red metal's strength. Steel prices have maintained all their recent strength, with a new high dally record | of production for March is indicated. “In the lumber industry, the advent of warmer weather in the Pacific North- west has resulted in a speeding up of work in logging camps and saw mills, and a consequent gain in employment, but, because of the Winter's curtail- ment, firmer prices. The February ex- hibit of permitted-for building, how- | ever, shows expenditures behind a year ago at most of tise larger cities. “An example of the relatively greater activity of distributive trade in the larger centers is had in this week's re- ports from New York City trade, which, as a whole, class as good.” More Gains Found. The review of R. G. Dun & Co re- + | ports that “with only two weeks of the first quarter remaining, the business record for the period shows points of of the ! volume of dealings and factors which | make for constructive trends. The con- fident opinions held at the ogening of this year have geen largely fulfilled, and in some instances surpassed, and expec- tations of further progress have a tang- ible basis. Preparations for the new season that is soon to begin are steadily widening, an early Easter is giving a | special impetus to retall trade, and un- usually mild weather in some sections. notably in the East, also has stimulated | Spring activities.” COTTON PRICES LOWER. NEW YORK, March 16 (4).—Cotton to- day opened steady at an advance of 3 to a decline of 3 points. There | was buying on the relatively firm show: | ing of Liverpool, but the effect of this | feature seemed to be offset by prospects for clearing weather in the South. The market eased off after the opening un- der week end realizing or liquidation. May contracts sold off to 21.14 and new October to 20.53. with the general list showing net declines of about 3 to 10 points at the end of the first half hour. Private cables reported that Bombay selling had been absorbed by trade call- ing, covering and buying on reports of rising waters in the Mississippi. They also reported more cloth sales to Egypt and the Near East. The amount of cot- ton on shipboard awaiting clearance at the end of the week was estimated at 111,000 bales, against 121,000 last year. Tobacco Expom High. ‘The year 1928 marks one of the greatest vears in the American tobacco trade, data collected by the Department of Commerce indicate. Total exports of leaf tobacco climbed to nearly 584, 000,000 pounds, which is the highest for any year save 1919, and which brought | more than $154.000,000 into the country. Exports in 1919 were approximateiy 777.000.000 pounds, but that year was not regarded as a normal year, as it saw the movement of large “stocks which piled up during the war. Export Copper Advanced. NEW YORK, March 16 (4#).—Refined copper for export was advanced 'z cent a pound today to 21!y cents, follow- ing a l,-cent rise late yesterday to 21 cents for domestic copper. Several weeks 8g0 copper prices moved up in !4-cent strides, but in the past week the pace quickened and three !,-cent advances were made. The peak, it is predicted in trade circles, is )et to come. Ford Stock Offer Delayed. NEW YORK, March 16 (#).—Cable advices have been received in Wall | Street, that a public offering of stock in the Ford Co. of Belgium, which has been set for mext Tuesday, has been postponed temporarily.
