40 MOFFETT REMAINS INNAVAL AIRPOST Hoover Reappoints Old Friend of Aviation to Direct Five- Year Program. By the Associated Press. The veteran hand of Rear Admiral William A. Moffett today took over the conwrol stick of the Naval Air Service for another period of service, despite the belief of a number of high rank- ing officers that the position of chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics should “be passed around among oflicers. Several positions in the naval es- tablishment, such as the chief of naval operations and commander of the Unit- ed States fleet, are given first to one officer and then to another. For this reason, some in the Navy felt Moffett should relinquish his post, inasmuch as he already has ed two terms. ident Hoover, however, has reap- d him for another term and this will enable him to see the completion of the five-year naval aircraft building program. This program was recom- mended by the Morrow Air Board, which inquired into the Nation's air defense after William Mitchell, at the time he was a brigadier general and second in command in the Army Air Corps, had made startling charges against the administration of the Army and Navy Air Services. Believes in Aircraft, ‘Whether the opposition to Moffett was made known at the White House is a matter of conjecture. It also is unknown whether Moffett's continuance in office was objected to by some of his brother officers for other reasons. The admiral is a whole-hearted be- liever in the powers of aircraft as a weapon of national defense, and during his administration of the Bureau of Aeronautics, the Navy's air arm has grown by leaps and bounds. Moffett was appointed head of the Navy Aeronautical Bureau at the time of its creation, in the early days of the Harding administration. At the pres- ent time_ the five-year building program is about at the half-way mark and the reappointment of the admiral was recommended by the new Secretary of the Navy, Charles Francis Adams; the National Aeronautical Association and a number of others. Moffet Is Gratified. “I am gratified at my reappointment,” Moffett said, on being notified of his re- appointment, “and for the opportunity afforded me to continue every effort for the advancement of naval aviation in co-operation with other aviation depart- ments, both civil and military, and with the aviation industry. “We are in the midst of the five-year aviation program, including two rigid airships recently contracted for. Much remains to be done, including the com- pletion of this program, the procure- ment of additional aircraft carriers, and in general the effort to leave nothing undone to make our naval aviation un- excelled and of the utmost value for the defense of our country.” SPELLING BEE PLANNED.
