BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 13.—In quiet trading. the stock market moved ahead today. The menace of Federal Reserve | action faded in the background. Call money, renewing at 7 per cent, dropped to 6 per cent in the last hour. The market left off not far from its best. Oils, steels and industrial specialties accounted for the bulk of the trading. Coppers did better, but were not buoyant, and the ralls were let alone almosy en-| tirely. The recovery was effected on a small turnover, a little larger than that of the day before, but way below the average for the month. Oils Lead Upturn. ‘The upturn was led by the oils. These directly at the start. Buying orders were heavy and quotations advanced easily. Atlantic Refining was the feature | on the expectation that the preferred stock would be retired and that pres- ent holders of the common would re- ceive valuable rights. | ‘This was in itself testimony, or the Street took it as such. to improvement in the oil trade. The statistics for crude ofl output published today were also en- couraging. They showed a cut of 36,950 barrels in production for the week end- ing March 9, compared with the prev- fous week. Besides Atlantic Refining, Barnsdall, Marland, Texas Corporation, Standard Oil of California and Standard of New York and Pan-American Petroleum which always moves over a wide range, jumped more than 5 points. Copper stocks added to yesterday's gains, notably Kennecott and Anaconda. Miami was again a feature on the up side, responding to reports of an in- crease in the dividend. Bethlehem Steel led that part of the list, running up a couple of points to the accompaniment of predictions that earnings this year would be highly favorable. U, S, Steel followed along. Among the higher priced stocks, Allied Chemical, at 288, was up 5 points, advancing a point and more be- tween sales. Commercial Solvents made a similar gain and in the utility group Peoples Gas set a new record top. More interest was taken in the lower priced utilities. What was evidently organized buying came into Electric Power & Light and lifted that stock to a new year’s high, POREIGN EXCHANGE. (Quotations furnished by W. B. Hibbs & Co.)
