Municipal Fish Market, Center Mar- ket and the wholesale commission house district promise to be places of inter- est to thousands of the visitors who will be here during the inaugural pe- riod, more especially those from rural districts. There probably will be among the visitors a great many persons who have been shipping commodities here for years, but who never before have been here. It 15 thought Municipal Fish Market will prove attractive to visitors from in- land places, persons who have to de- pend upon marine products shipped in ice or really frozen for supplies. Poto- mac River fish will not be so plentiful, however, but dealers will have enough of them to give the visitors an idea of the several species of fish caught in these waters. Various Displays Planned. There probably will be many others who have never before seen oysters in the shell and the handling of the bi. valves will be a revelation to them. In the Center Market and wholesale com- mission house district the visitors will see meats and poultry of every variety as well as fruits and vegetables, both foreign and domestic, that will astonish many of them. Improved trading conditions were re- ported by wholesalers yesterday and this morning, many retailers getting supplies early, realizing difficulties they may encounter Monday morning in an effort to reach the wholesale district and return across Pennsyivania avenue after the roping off of that thorough- fare. Numerous wholesalers will be at their places of business tomorrow and Monday morning. Many of the wholesalers have plan- ned early closing Monday, probably about noon, and Center Market will be open Monday morning until 11 o'clock. ‘The market will close promptly at the hour agreed upon, it is stated, and persons reaching there after that time will be doomed to disappointment. The market will remain open Saturday night until 9 o’clock. Retailers were on hand yesterday and early this morning looking for supplies for the week-end inaugural trade, and no difficulty was encountered in their efforts to get commodities of all va- rieties. Poultry dealers had fairly heavy supplies of broiling, frying, baking and stewing chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese and keats that were in demand, espe- cially for the hotel trade. On the commission line there were attractive displays of all varieties of fruits and vegetables, while meat, butter and egg merchants had their usual at- tractive supplies to offer retailers. Prices of most commodities this morn- ing were substantially the same as prices quoted yesterday. Today’s Wholesale Prices—Jobbers’ Prices Slightly Higher. Big Spring seines are not yet in operation in the lower Potomac River, and shad and herring from there have not yet been in evi- dence. Small Winter seines being operated in the creeks are responsible for the receipt of many small perch, both white and yellow, and quantities of sandperch, mostly alive, also have reached here this week. The netters also have taken small quantities of cat- fllslh {rom the creeks and sent them here alive. Florida and North Carolina netters have supplied the local dealers quanti- ties of shad, both roes and bucks, the fish reaching here in splendid condi- tion and finding ready sale. The fish from North Carolina sold at 10 cents & pound higher than the Florida fish, roes selling at 40 and 50 and bucks at 30 and 40 cents a pound. Herring brought around 10 cents a pound. Dealers also received red snappers, king mackerel, jumping mullets and speckled trout from Florida shippers, all fresh caught, while salmon, halibut and other frozen fish were received {from the North and West. Oysters More Plentiful. Lobsters continued scarce and high, dealers quoting them at 75 cents a pound, while shrimp, fairly plentiful, found ready sale, the green at 30 and the cooked at 60 cents a pound. Crab meat was quoted at 75 cents a pound. Fillets of sole, cod and haddock were among the week's most interesting offerings. Buyers, according to reports, are becoming accustomed to buying the boneless fish and many of them no longer crave the numerous varieties of fish from which the bones have not been removed. Oysters have been more plentiful this week. Selects sold at $2.50 and stand- ards at $2.25 a gallon, shell stock sell- ing around $2.25 and $2.50 a bushel. Clams have been scarce this week at $2 per 100, and scallops were plentiful at $4 a gallon. Oranges continue to lead the fruit market. Supplies have been more than ample to meet this week's demands at @ wide range of prices, much of the fruit being small and selling around $3 a crate. Some of the California fruit is said to have been affected by cold _LEGAL NOTICES. HENRY GILLIGAN, Attorney. Hothouse cucumbers have been more plentiful and cheaper the past few days, selling at $3 and $3.50 a crate. Toma- toes, 3-pan crates, sold mostly around $2.50, most of them repacked, while 6-pan original crates were quoted at $4 and $4.50. Vegetable Shipments. C. ROYLE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 2.—Bread still is the staff of life, but fewer Americans are leaning on it than in the past. Grocers in various sections of the country are reporting a falling off in bread consumption and in purchases of wheat flour, as compared with this time last year. They profess to be unable to t for this trend, but some food experts feel that the dress styles of the momeRt have more than s little to do Earnings of three of gs the four leading baking companies which have bread as their main product were less in 1928 than in 1927 and the decline has shown no signs of mending this year. These g;c;lnu ranged from 2.7 per cent to The potency of the appeal for slim figures to women has recently been shown in the advertising policy of a leader in the tobacco industry. One bread producer who is also interested in textiles outlined the situation as it appeared to him today on his return from a swing around the country. He also is a rabld base ball fan whose opinion on training camp developments is respected. Effect of Fashions. “How do the pitchers look?” he wa. asked by base ball friends. “Too early,” he replied. “No curves, only change of pace. And come to think of it, that about expresses the situation in bread and textiles, too. Women won't have curves and business l:.;: uoq{mquem is showing changes of The price of flour and the cost of Pproducing a loaf of bread are not the absolute factors they once were. Now distribution is one of the bakers' main problems, and so is the competition from chain stores that bake their own bread. This is being met in some in- stances by the absorption of chain stores by the bakers. Bread is now produced more cheaply, more hygienically and more uniformly than ever before. The problem is to sell it. This has been made easler by the low level of flour prices, which has widened fit margins, and it is pos- sible that volume will be built up as the year progresses. The quotations on wheat have stimu~ {lated buying by the millers and the volume of flour produced has been high. From the Northwest alone 50,000,000 bushels of wheat in the form of flour have been shipped abroad. This has helped the millers and they suffered little from drops in wheat and flour prices since they protected themselves by hedges in the wheat futures markets. Product Value Large. ‘The value of bake-shop products is tremendous. While accurate figures still are lacking for 1928, it is estimated they totaled over $1,125,000,000. So important is this industry that the farmer seems likely to profit from the amount of pro- tein in his wheat, which demonstrates its value for flour, to a greater extent this year than ever before. Wheat now is bought by millers and paid for on the basis of protein value and efforts are being made by Federal authorities to see that the grading of the wheat is more thoroufhly done than in the past. Total value of flour to be pro- duced this year is expected to exceed $1,120,000,000. DUN'S WEEKLY REVIEW. NEW YORK, March 2 (#).—Du Review says: As was expected, two months of the New Year have added substantially to the constructive ele- ments in the general business situation. The net result has been plainly favor- able, and the continued unevenness of conditions, with some disappointing jpects, is a wholly natural phase. Simultaneous progress in all lines, and in the same degree, would be an eco- nomic phenomenon, and its absence now does not obscure the fact that the main trend is ipward. That movement has attained particular vigor in steel and copper, where centuated buoy- ancy prevails, and a strengthening of the markets for these commodities has been a logical concomitant of the ex- p!.ndlni demands. Competition for orders keeps prices in various channels on a comparatively low basis, yet ad- vances almost balance declines in Dun’s comprehensive list, and it has been the exception, as in hides and leather, where pressure to sell has been suffi- clently pronounced to cause conspicuous weakness. Even in those instances, an abatement of depression has developed recently. It is a feature of most textile divisions, moreover, that a large - duction is passing steadily into con- sumption, and in certain cases difficulty is being experienced in obtaining sup~ plies as fl\::ckly as they are ne ‘Weekly bank clearings, $13,225,740,000, an increase of 26.7 per cent over a year ago. —_— Mexico City and Vera Cruz, Mexico, re to be connected by a modern auto- mobile highway which will follow the youte okthe old Spanish road.
