These words: “To whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little,” re- veal the spiritual destitution of the proud pharisee, Simon, who could see nothing in the Mmoving incident of our Lord's contact with the -sinful woman but a disproof of His prophetic office. Had this self-satisfied host, who in-| vited the Master to his house only to | treat Him with scant courtesy, known the wealth of affection behind the meeting of th> Savior and the sorrow- inz penitent, he would have shared her consciousness of God's favor and ac- ceptance. Some scholars are inclined to re- gard the quotation as an addition to the text. They argue that forgiveness does not depend on love, but flows from a deep sense of the grace of God. You can rest assured that God does not at any time or under any circumstances achieve his ends by dou- ble-dealing or deception, and when writers of Holy Writ attribute such mo- tives to Him ihe attribution is due to their erroneous knowledge of God and of the conduct He expects from men So it is certainly not incumbent on you to believe that God commanded these infamous acts Follow the guidance which you find in the example and teaching of Jesus and read such incidents as vou find in these ancient documents in order to realize what an arduous and dark ascent the true conception of God had to climb until it reached iis full me- ridian of glory in the person of our his will he followad | ence, for when our sense of indebted- | Lord. WILL HOLD MEETING | s | the head of His church, and obey Him | the lesson upon the Church of the Liv- | ing God. Christ saw in the confess that we considered Iast week, the com- mencement of the church. The spiri- tual organization that Christ proposed build, ought not to be confused with e various asscmblies of people \-hn; THE PARABLE OF THE SEEDS. n of Peter, | to th have met in their visible congregations as churches throughout the Christian | centuries. either kingdom nor church, | | that Jesus established to introduce the Kingdom into the hearts of men. as used |in this week’s lesson refers to the local | | churches. The “Kingdom of Heaven" | | refers to the Messiah's rule on earth in | | the hearts of His people. It is broader | |than the church, but it includes the | | organized spiritual forces found in His {church. The Master Builder of the | church referred to it only three times. | | according to the gospels. Historically | speaking,!we do not find tke existence | |of ‘any visible organization until after | | Christ's resurrection and His gift of | | the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Follow- ing Peter's sermon, when 3,000 were | cenvicted of their sins, gave evidence of | their conversion by confessing the Lord | in baptism, we find a church whose membership demonstrated their loyalty to the Christian faith by continuing steadfast in the apostles’ teaching, apostolic fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers. They showed their unity | by establishing a community of pos- | | sessions and assembling by themselves in addition to faithful attendance upon the temple services. Church’s Spiritual Growth. | Christ sought'to fill His apostles with | onfidence in the future of the kingdom | by expounding its spiritual character. | He was rejected in Nazareth by preach- | ing its universality, and the same action | followed in Capernaum by His insis- tence upon the spirituality of the King- dom and of the-church, for it is a part of the larger organization and will cease its functions when Christ sets up | His kingdom. Jesus illustrated the |growth of the church, which is a spiritual organism, by two parables— the growing seed and the-mustard seed. The Master insisted upon the develop- ment of His work, although He pointed out its growth would be of a mysterious nature. This is true of all life. He had faith that although they were a few feeble folk in numbers eventually His gospel would be proclaimed among all natlons and His kingdom would domi- nate all men and nations. When Paul sent his letter to the | church in Rome the evidence bf the coming fulfillment of Christ’s hopes for His church were apparent, for the apostie speaks of the fact that they were “many, vet one.” The marvelous advance being made upon the mission fields today would be greater if all the members of Christ's body would rec- ognize their relation to Jesus Christ as |as the various members of the body obey the directions issued by the head of the body. Mohammedanism is method; Christianity upon the person- ality of Jesus Christ, the Son of Man as God. Jesus is more than the founder of the church, for it is His body. He | has poured His life into it. He took |up His constant abode with His fol- | lowers, dwelling in His church through | the presence of the Holy Spirit. The church 1s nourished by its vital com- munion with Christ as the source of its |life and sustainer of its spiritual | vitality, filling it with a practical piety fon one hand and a spiritual righteous- ness on the other. The church has |to fill the earth with its message. In its development there have appeared | many varieties, just as there exisi in the Senior Society of the Christian En- deavor meets, with Donald Lmbuxr?rd 2 s | as leader, and the topic for discussion Bible Questions Of the Day By Harlow R. How deliver a communication of this char- acter when imprisoned? 10. What was Paul's end? Answers. 1. The two parables of the seeds— the seed growing secretly and the mus- tard seed—were spoken in the Autumn of 28 AD, during the second year of Christ's ministry. 2. They were delivered by the Sea of Galilee. 3. The parable of the seeds growing secretly, 4. The Gospel of Mark. 5. The parables exemplify the church seek to inculcate noticed ways from little beginnings to become mighty in extent and results. 6. Paul wrote his Epistle to the Ephe- slans during his first imprisonment in Rome, about 61 or 62 A.D. 7. The epistle was a comprehensive statement of Christian faith and prac- tice, particularly in those details upon which Paul wished to lay stress. o 8. The epistle was delivered by Ty- | chicus, whom Paul designated as “a be- | loved brother and faithful minister.” 9. Paul's imprisonment in Rome was not arduous. He was well treated. though kept under guard, and was al- lowed to live in a home provided by his friends. He conversed with whom | he pleased and wrote as he desired. 10. Paul was released, only to be im- prisoned a second time, when he suf- fered death at the hands of the Ro- mans. REV. THOMAS E.
