Conflicting impressions are current at : the Capitol as to Herbert Hoover's de- | sire with reference to the extension for | one year of the authority of the Federal Radio Commission. ‘The House committee has ordered a | favorable report by unanimous vote on the proposal to extend for a year the It is reliably re- | ported that President-elect Hoover | thinks the whole radio problem should go back to the Department of Com- merce, where it was originally. Mr. Hoover, on the other hand, has | indicated that to thrust a radio tangle at the new Secretary of Commerce might be a serious strain and unless | the administrative personnel of the | present commisson could be taken over | by the Department completely so as to | effect a smooth transition, he would be | inclined to let matters rest as they are. The present arrangement is a com- | promise. It was intended that for & year or two the commission should be a tribunal of direct jurisdiction and lhfl\ it could be an appeal board. The | question now is whether the Department of Commerce is ready to take direct the com- supervision with, of course, mission as a court of appeal, Some of the members of the com- mission have resigned and it is hardly likely that President Coolidge will at- tempt to send names to the Senate until it is clear what Congress is going to do. And if Congress doesn't act until the closing days of the session it will be left to Mr. Hoover to make the | new apartments, which in the end might amount to the same thing as having the whole thing placed in the Department of Commerce. Few men are going to be willing to accept appointment for a year if it is known that the commission’s work will be taken over by the Department of Commerce immediately thereafter. Mr. Hoover has it in his power to straighten out the tangle and indicate | directly to congressional leaders what he wants done about it. Those who have consulted him find a disinclination on his part to interfere, though he con- cedes that the present situation is un- satisfactory and that he would much prefer to have radio administered by ent of Commerce as he orifl:nlly g!eswd D. Otto Heins of New York, who de- scribes himself as a “friendly alien,” has filed suit in District of Columbia Supreme Court to recover more than $1,000,000 which he claims is being detained from him by the allen prop- erty custodian and Treasury officials by an alleged illegal seizure under the trading-with-the-enemy act. Helns says he was the owner of 900 shares of the stock of Eisemann Mag- neto Co., which was seized un- der the impression that the stock be- longed to Robert Bosch of the Bosch Magneto Co. The stock was sold for $544,560 and turned over to the treas- urer of the United States. MAN DIES IN V HOTEL George Diasselliss, Former Treasury Construction Engineer, Found in Room by Employe.
