Ward, president of the Ward Baking Corpora- tion and regarded as the most powerful ! figure in the baking industry, died of | heart disease at his desk yesterday. He was 45 years old. He was of the third generation of his family to engage in the baking industry. He came into prominent public notice in 1926 when the Government inter- vened to stop a $2,000,000 merger of food industries which he had con- ceived and was putting into operation. One feature of the proposed combine | which was organized in Baltimore as the Ward Food Products Corporation |f§ was a plan to give one-tenth of the | earnings to charity. Mr. Ward was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., educated at Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa.; and the Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania. CHICAGO, February 7.—It may now be predicted, with a reasonable degree of certainty, that “Bathhouse John” Coughlin, fashion plate and poet lau- reate of the city council, will be elected to his nineteenth term as alderman February 26. Assurance became doubly sure with the announcement that Bgthhouse John’s only opposition, Edward T. ;Ver‘lla, had decided a contest would be utile. “In view of your long record in representing the first ward of our city,” Joria told Coughlin Tuesday, (I see no reason why another two years should become a matter of electoral quibbling between us.
