LIBRARY SCHOOLS URGED BY UNION Establishment of Chairs of Library Science Proposed for Latin Universities. A program for closer intellectual re- Jations between the American repub- lics, including establishment of library schools or chairs of library science in the several universities of the Latin- American countries, was urged today by the governing board of the Pan-Ameri- can Union after hearing the report of its permanent committee on bibliog- raphy. Other measures included in the pro- gram are the establishment in Latin America of assoctations of librarians and bibliographers, the translation and g_um:caunn in Spanish, Portuguese and rench of standard textbooks on library | i Bcience and similar_translations and ublications, _including the anguage, of the best liferary, scientific, bibliographic and historical productions by citizens of the American republics, The permanent committee of the gov- erning board 15 composed of the Am- bassador of Chile, Carlos G. Davila: the Minister of Panama, Ricardo J. Alfaro, and the Minister of Venezuela, Carlos F. Grisanti. It was appointed pursuant to the terms of a resolution adopted at the sixth Pan-American conference which met at Havana in 1928, which proposes that an inter-American bibliographic commission be convened by the govern- | Ing board of the Pan-American Union at | which representatives of all the Ameri- | €an republics will be in attendance. The governing board also acted favor- ably on a communication received from the rector of the University of Havana, suggesting the desirability of holding the | Pan-American Congress of Rectors, Deans and Educators at the same time | 8s the International Congress of Uni- versities, which will meet at Havana on February 15, 1930. AKRON, Ohio, February 7 (#).—A "mkmfm was burned critically in an powdsred fuel supply house of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in South Akron early today. The blast virtually demolished the small building and started a fire which was brought un- der control with little damage to the plant, workmen there said. Edward Amberger was taken to a hospital with critical burns. He was the only one njured. The detonation rocked the city and brought many calls to police and fire departments after shattering windows in the district. —_— WALES MAY HALT TOURS. HAVANA, February 7 (#).—The Atlantic Fruit Line steamer Glendola ‘was aground today on a reef at Puerto Rico Point, in Nipe Bay, Cuba, and asked tugs be sent from Kingston, Jamaica, to aid her. The ship was en route to Banes, Cuba, to take a load of sugar when it grounded. The single tug in Nipe Bay was unable to get her off. MEXICO CITY, February 7.—A freight train threading its way through Mexican mountains today carried 174 men and women, convicted as crimi- nals, to a fate deemed here as bad as or worse than death. Tomorrow the 174 will arrive at Man- zanillo, Pacific port, and will be put aboard a small steamer which will take them to the penal colony on a tropical island in Las Tres Marias (the Three Marys) group, off the coast of the state of Nayarit.
