Meanwhile, the House of Represent- atives investigating committee, which preferred the ten articles against the executive, prepared for another busy week of probing into alleged miscon- duct by State officers, Lawyers Offer Free Aid. On the eve of his appearance, the suspended fovemor last night appealed fo “my fellow citizens” for funds to aid in securing counsel. He said that “when the impeachment charges were filed, they found me without a dollar With which to organize counsel for my defense. Many of my lawyer friends have volunteered thelr services free of charge, but I cannot expect them to Mm‘i%'s_o much without being com- Pensated. The executive has not announced names of his attorneys and the exact course of precedure for the trial re- hained in doubt. It was believed, how- ever, that Johnston would object to each charge on the grounds that it does dot constitute an impeachable offense. Five Charges Listed. ‘The five charges to be answered to- day are: Article II—Unlawful diversion and misappropriation of funds to pay J. ‘W. “Buck” Eldridge. Modernfsm Invades ‘Republic’ Speaking Strange Language|: munity Insists Independ.- ence Is Maintained. By the Assoclated Press. BESANCON, France, January 28— The self-styled Republic of Sauget, near here, has decided to modernize it- self a little, though it is careful to nounce that this does not mean it is intending to give up any inde- pendence. Sauget claims that its freedom dates from feudal tithes. The 500 inhabitants of the three small villages dround the capital, Montbenoit, speak & patois no other Frenchman can understand. Though French is taught in the schools the children grow up speaking Sauget, which appears to a cross between Basque and- Chinese to the uninitiated. The inhabitants always speak of inhabitants of nearby towns as e nch, ‘The modernization was literally forced on the Republic by the growth of the tourist business.. For over a hundred years Sauget has had its own national hymn in its own language. Recently it was agreed that it was’ discourteous to sing before s something they couldn't unders Consequently a French translation was made. Sauget wishes it distinctly understood, however, that such a move does not create a precedent. MILLS CRITICALLY ILL. —— Father of Undersecretary of Treas- ury in Perilous Condition.
