STANDARD OIL WAR INTERESTS SENATE Investigating Group Is Con- cerned Over Outcome of Stewart Ouster Voting. BY DAVID LAWRENCE. Members of the Senate who took a leading part in the Teapot Dome con- troversy and its sequel, the examination of. Col. Robert W. Stewart of the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana, are much concerned as to the sible outcome of the voting in the forthcoming meeting of Standard Oil Co. of Indiana stock- holders. ‘There Is a féeling that the revelations before the Senate committee have been beclouded by other issues, particularly the money-making opportunities for stockholders under one leadership as against a reorganization under another. Meant What He Said. It 1s most unusual to find the radical group in the Senate fighting ulnngslde a wealthy industrialist like Joh Rockefeller, jr., but they have dhcm ered that Mr. Rockefeller meant what he said when he told the committee that ‘even if he had only a single.share Inuud of & substunthl Inurest in a mpany he would feel a moral respon- slbmtv to c!elnse lhe institution of. ‘mngdoinz o( y kind, llers minority interest it hu been mc here right along was suffie cient to bring about.an imm: 8- nation of Mr. Stewart, in fact there was a tendency here for some time be- lieve that he could have forced Mr. Stewart out merely by asking (cr - resignation. Now that some of the difficulties Mr Rocke(eller has had are. understodd by the men on Capitol Hill and they see also the possibflity that the materialistic aspect may influence the voting of stockholders as contrasted with the ideals for which Mr. Rockefeller stands, there is a dl.sposl jon to inquire Nl’f.h into the f Mr. suwm wins out, ‘there. un- doubtedly will be a reaction here, the consequences of which will not be clear- ly seen until it spends its full force. The-speeches by Senators Norris and Nye- m lhe Senate are the beginning of what prove to be a further inquiry into the whole episode. While the al- leged coercion of stockholders may not be investigated, Mr. Nye thinks the circumstances under which the jury that acquitted Mr. Stewart - issued a statement of . comment on the case might be looked into a little more. See Possible Repudiation. ‘The truth is the Senators would look upon a vote of the stockholders uphqld- ing Mr. Stewar thl efforts they m z more tim Mr. Rockeuuer is defeated and the stockholders approve of Mr. Stewart's leadership. ~The possibilities - of a further inquiry are being discussed 1y. but nobody seems to know jnst frcm what angle the subject will ap: proached anew and the belief u th:t antil the vote is taken no further steps will be pre here.
