RAIL BONDS GAIN IN MIXED MARKET |Lower Priced Issues Influ- enced by Decision in Central Case. i BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. | 8pscinl Dispsteh to The Star. I | | 1 NEW YORK, January 28—A new the advance in the issues of some of the small railroad lines, whose ‘posi- tions has actually or sentimentally been imerce Commission in the New York Central case. Of these the most conspicuous were the Fonda, Johnston and Gloversville 4138, and the Ulster and Delaware 5s. Cloted a8 30, ey opened. today at ¢l a 3 'y apéne al 41 and later showed a net advance for gain of 14 points. ‘The decision also strengthened the position of the Minneapolis and St. Louis and Iowa Central bonds, which were active last week. They rose 1 to 2 points. Des Moines and Fort Dodges 4s were up 2 points. The fact that only a limited number of such bonds have a listed market probably prevented a demonstration in this group. In contrast with the rapid advances in these decidedly inferior bonds was the heaviness in high grade issues, and especially in the new 41; per cent rail- road mortgages created last year. Some during the Summer of 1928. This was one of the comparisons that made the price of the ipeake & Ohio 41,8, which were brought out today, look high to prospective purchasers, These are also above the market for such bonds as St. Paul 4';s and at about a pnmv with Great Northern 41 * The convertible issues gave account of themaelves, especially the International Telephone “zl Wwhich advanced 1l2 points to & new high price, and the flrem 78, whose gain was nearly 5 points. Nearly all of the leading lines show improvement compared with the cor- responding period of 1928, More than ordinary importance is at- tached to the fact that factories have increased their activities earlier this year than in the past after the holiday shutdown. As a matter of fact, some plants in and around Baltimore omitted the usual January shutdown for over- hauling and others curtailed the perhfl for that purpose. * Advance orders indicate that plants % | Wil be fully employed during the entire nm uarter. As a matter of fact, some “have sold their output for the pmnd and are’ accepting additional busineéss subject to delivery.
