Dry Squad Digs Up 72 Jars in “Garden” And Arrests Pair Having literally “unearthed” 72 jars of alleged liquor in the back yard of a house in the 700 block of Ninth street southwest, members of Sergt. O. J. Letterman's vice squad yesterday arrested two colored wom- en on charges of sale and possession of liquor. Freshly turned earth observed in the back yard of the house aroused the suspicion of the squad and Po- liceman R. H. Knapp cf No. 4, who was with them. Hardly believing any one would start a garden in January, the officers investigated and dug up the cache. The squad had entered the prem- ises on a warrant and found a small quantity in the house. The women taken into custody described themselves as Mary Wash- ington, 20, and Lishia Taylor, 23. Apparently believing that the days of machine-gun warfare are about to de- scend upon Washington, a salesman for a bullet-proof vest today called upon Maj. Edwin B. Hesse, superintendent of police, to endeavor to sell his wares to the department at $125 each. The salesman informed the major that the vests were in use in the de- partments at Indianapolis, Bloomington, IL; Dayton, Ohio, and other cities. ‘When reporters called on the major this morning, they found the salesman wav- ing a rifle around and for a minute be- lieved that a sensational story was about to be provided. The major informed the salesman that he had already scen the vests and that he would “think over” the matter of buying some. ~ GAS VICTIM RECOVERS. ‘The young woman overcome by gas Wednesday night at the home of Ralph Snowden Hill, assistant solicitor of the State Department, who was reported by police to be “Miss Louise Hill” was later learned to be Miss Louise Hill Conkey, adopted daughter of Mr. Hill and a debutante of last season. Today Miss Conkey had entirely re- covered from the effects of the gas. She was overcome when she was cooking in the kitchen of her home and the flame of the gas stove became extinguishad. Found unconscious, she was revivad by the Fire Department rescue squad. She remained at home, refusing hospi- tal treatment. Revenue Commissioner Named. Epeclal Dispatch to The Star.
