REED WIELDS MOP IN KANSAS DRY DRIVE Vigorous Crusade Started in State Capital by New Governor as Raiders Nab 10. By the Associated Press. TOPEKA, Kans., January 18—Strin- gent efforts to dry up Kansas, where nearly a half century, have been inaugu- rated under the leadership of the new chief executive, Gov. Clyde M. Reed, and the State Capital already has felt the crusade. Raiding squads of Federal and State prohibition officers launched into action here Wednesday and 10 arrests were made. Announcement followed that raiding would continue until the town was dried up. Given assurance that the Legislature was ready to take up his proposal for a special fund of $40,000 to be expended under his direction for dry work, the executive has turned to the State law enforcement machinery to put his ideas KING MAINTAINS PROGRESS TO HEALTH Ruler's Interest in Palace Affairs Renewed, but Reading Is Forbidden. By the Associated Press. LONDON, January 18.—It was stated authoritatively this morning that the in King George's condition had been maintained. ‘The Daily Mail said today that King George had enjoyed long periods of sleep during the last few days and his interest in palace affairs had reawaken- ed. He was not allowed to read, how- ever, since the effort at concentration might prove too great. The King was having much longer talks with members of the royal family, especially Queen Mary. Her visits to his bedside are more frequent, although they are limited to 10 minutes each timea lest the King's strength be over- taxed. BOMB WRECKS HALL. Col. Willlam B. Ladue, Engineer Commissioner of the District, gave his whole-hearted indorsement of the sur- vey plans and told the more than 600 business men attending the meeting at the Willard Hotel that he believed the project would prove of “utmost value” not only to business interests of the city but to the District and other gov- ernmental agencies here. Merle Thorpe, editor of the Nation's Business, publication of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, dis- cussed the prospective values of a model community survey to a growing city in the light of amazing developments of modern business, science and industry, and John Ihlder, formerly in charge of the civic development department of the national chamber, who supervised the drafting of the survey plan to be {used here, outlined the scope, purposes |and needs of such planning for future expansion. Approve Cramton Bill. Closely allied with this planning for ‘Washington’s future expansion the trade body in a brief business session placed its stamp of approval on the Cramton measure, providing for the advancement of a loan of $16,000,000 from the Fed- eral Treasury without interest to the National Capital Park and Planning Commission for the acquisition and de- velopment of the parks and playgrounds system of the Distrig, to be paid back from District revenues at the rate of $1,000,000 annually. Opening discussion of the projected survey, W. W. Everett, president of the Board of Trade, announced that already half the fund needed for the city analysis had been raised, and called on all members of the organization and other citizens to lend their financial support. The survey, he declared, would prove one of the most important projects for the good of the city, serving as a guide to worth-while future growth of Wash- ington's major activities. One of the outstanding needs of the District, he said, is sufficient industry to provide |7 adequate employmknt for the city's youth. He predicted the survey would be a real service to Washington in this regard. Col. Ladue declared that no real/plan for Washington’s growth could be made without comprehensive data on all phases of its development. The com- munity most successful, he held, is the one having leaders with the greatest vision. “The world steps aside to let the man pass who knows where he is go- ing,” he said, suggesting the value of planning for the future of the city. Different in Ten Years. Washington, he said, will present an entirely different condition in the next ten years. For this reason, he con- tended, plans should be laid for orderly business development, with the en- couragement of desired types of expan- sion and elimination of some of the uneconomic present features, as well as_some of the ugly, unsightly ones. He pointed out that the model survey planned may show over-development along some lines and under-develop- ment in others. One of the greatest values of the survey, he believed, would be to show clearly what Washington already has and to guide future ex- pansion. It should make cHizens of Washington more intelligent salesmen for their city, he contended. 2 Mr. Ihlder emphasized in outlining g g the purposes of the projected survey EILEEN ROLLISON ) |that Nt The contemplated. survey is to Spray Solutions For Nose and Throat P. Within a few months there will be no more feverish, bilious, | headachy, constipated, pale and puny children! That prophecy | would surely come true if every |mother could see for herself| how quickly, easily and harm-| lessly the bowels of babies and | 'children are cleansed, regu- lated, given tone and strength by a product which has proved its merit and reliability to do what is claimed for it to mil- lions of mothers in over fifty years of steadily increasing use. As mothers find out from using it how children respond to the gentle influence of Cali- fornia Fig Syrup by growing stronger, sturdier and more ac- tive daily they simply have to tell other mothers about it. That'’s one of the reasons for its overwhelming sales of over four million bottles a year. A Washington mother, Mrs. Mary Rollison, 1235 I Street N.E, says: “Before my daugh- ter, Eileen, was a year old, she began having constipation. Mother got me to give her Cali- fornia Fig Syrup and in a few days she was all right and looked fine again. This pleased me so much that I have used Fig Syrup ever since for all her colds or little upset spells. It always stops her trouble quick,| strtengthens her, makes her eat.” i Always ask for California Fig Syrup by the full name and see that the carton bears the word “California.” Then youll get the genuine CALIFORN FIG SYRUP LAXATIVE-TONIC for CHILDREN Referring to numerous surveys that have been made by cities struggling to meet keen competition of other cities, he declared that lack of tangible re- sults in some cases has been due in part to the fact that such surveys were | merely stock-taking projects. Another fault of surveys has been that the figures compiled were per- mitted “to do their own talking.” He pointed out that s@rvey material must be interpreted to discover its real meaning. Used for Future Planning. | _‘The Washington survey data, he con- cluded, must be used as a point of departure for future planning, the | statistics gathered to be wisely inter- | preted and used as a guide to develop- | ment along beneficial lines. Phases of the survey most important should be started first, and as the data becomes | available, should be put to use and tried out. The survey, he contended, “should be from the viewpoint of business develop- ment in the community. To try to make a survey from the viewpoint of every group, from that of the Federal Government, from that of the Winter residents here, etc., would be impossible. But if it is to be of full value to the business element, it must take into ac- count all these other elements.” “The survey also should take into consideration that Washington is pri- marily a Capital City, this being the element which most distinguishes it from other cities and upon which the present prosperity of the community is | based.” The Washington survey, he said, will ington market and to guide the develop- ment of that market. the Pittsburgh Housing Assoclation.
