T 32 . » -~ U.5. ACTION SEEN IN GIRL'S DEATH Superintendent of New Mex- ico Home Faces Charge of Manslaughter. By the Associated Press. ALBUQUERQUE, N. Mex, January | 18.—Possibility of Federal charges of | violation of the Harrison anti-narcotic fct today faced officials of the New Mexico Girls' Welfare Home here in gonnection with the death Sunday of iss Helen Haskew, 18, an inmate, fol- wing an injection of twilight sleep. | Announcement already has been made | by District Attorney Eugene Lujen that manslaughter charges will be filed to- day against Bertha Lips, superintendent of the home, and Dr. Evelyn Frisbie, | medical adviser, who were held responsi- | ble for the death by a coroner's jury. When a joint committee of the State Legislature, headed by Gov. R. C. Dii- lon, yesterday began an official investi- gation of the death and conditions at | the home, J. C. Pieper, Federal opera- tive, announced he was following the | evidence closely to determine if those in charge had violated Federal ‘anti-| narcotic laws in using the drug as a| sedative. . He asked permission of the legislative committee to question girl inmates and officials of the home. The coroner’s in- vestigation of the death revealed that Miss Haskew and five other girls had been given the drug last Saturday night when they created a disturbance in pro- test to solitary confinement and bread- and-water diet which was their punish- ment for escaping from the home. Miss Lips testified before the legisla- tors that about 20 injections of twilight sleep had been given various inmates of the home since she had been in charge. She became superintendent in Novem- ber, 1926. MAN AND WOMAN HOLD UP | BAKER, ROB HIM OF $37| Colored Couple With Gun Visit Clayton Myers’ Shop in Early Morning and Take Cash. Returning to his bakery shop at 231 Florida avenue about 3 o'clock this morning, Clayton Myers, 23 years old, was met by a colored man and woman who, after ordering some cakes, drew a pistol on him and robbed him of $37. Myers, whose shop is in the base- ment of the Florida avenue address, says he had just reached the store after a trip to Virginia and unlocked the door when the colored couple ap- proached. The man searched Myers pockets, taking all the money he had and two small checks. Mpyers says the bandit examined a check for $44 but did not take it, The man warned, Myers, as he walk- ed away with his companion up Florida avenue, not to give an alarm. Myers remained in his shop a short time and then drove to the second precinct. e HONOR LEE’S MEMORY.
