INSTALLMENT XXIL IFE was very pleasant for Rich- ard Ross these days. He found himself scarcely thinking of his wife at all. Or if she did come into his mind, he had an im- mediate feeling of relief that she was not_about to hamper his movements. The lunch with Bob West while Yvonne was presumably boarding her boat for France was the beginning of Richard's re-entrance into society. After lunch they had played bridge with two other men until late afternoon. The score settled, Bob stretched and said, “Let’s go out for a swing along the old avenue before Anne’s tea.” Richard joined him and soon they were part of the 5 o'clock parade that took its well dressed way up and down Fifth avenue. While they weré waiting for traffic at Forty-fifth street some one in a passing motor hailed Bob vigorously. “Bob West! Bob, come here.” The two men turned. Anne Lovelace was beckoning them from the window | of a big town car. They stepped from the curb as she held the door open, got in beside her. “Let me take you over to the house, she sald to Bob, and then, half shyly she extended her hand to Richard “We don’t see much of you these days, she said to him. “Been awfully busy,” Richard gn- swered. “You're looking well, Anne.” Anne was looking well. She was smartly dressed and Richard found himself admiring her skillfully made up complexion. “Dick’s coming to tea.” Bob said, leaning back comfortably. Richard “Yep, Dick's old la\lflgl}’ei ¢ ob went on. woman went back to France to_visit the old home town today and Dicky boy is having a holiday.” “Oh, has Mrs. Ross gone back to France?” Anne asked, wide-eyed as she looked at Richard. “Just, for a visit,” Richard said hastily “She got homesick, so she has gone now and in the Fall I'll probably go over and bring her back. She lives with her grandparents, you know. They're pretty old, and she wanted to see them before they died.” “She was such a prettly little thing,” Anne said. “too bad she got so lonely.” “And some cook!” Bob exclaimed. “I never ate such a meal in my life as that dinner she gave us out there that night, 'member, Anne?” “Yes indeed—well, we ought not to let Richard get so lonely, ought we Bob?” “Don’t intend to. He's stepping out now. Doctor's orders, needs a change, all that.” “Really? Are you feeling badly, Rich- ard?” Anne's voice was full of sympathy ust a bit seedy, working too hard, keeping to myself too much I guess,” Richard answered. “Here we are,” Anne said. The tea party was a merry ‘one. Anne carefully toned her conversation down to what she belleved Richard would like. Bob, with a sardonic grin, seconded her efforts. Richard carried away a carefully given impression that Anne had changed from the sophisticated girl who had socked him three years before. She had a way of drooping her mouth a little wistfully, and of falling suddenly silent in the midst of the talk and staring gently straight ahead, eoming back to reality with a start. “Seeing visions, Anne,” Bob asked maliciously after one of these mental excursions. . Anne laughed gently. 'm sorry,’ she said, “but having Richard here this way makes me think of the good times we had together so long ago—remember the tennis, Dick?” “We'll play some more this Spring,” Richard promised. They parted with the understanding that Dick was to call some evening soon to take Anne to the theater. She ex- plained that she was very busy for the next few days—but early the following week—Tuesday—ves, Tuesday would be splendid, Dick might find her with a free evening. Anne was too wise to begin her pur- suit too suddenly. And then she had a plan for the next few days. She was bone tired and she knew how the weari- ness of her face would come out in the strong sunlight where Richard would plainly drag her if they were to ride together or play tennis as he had sug- gested. Leaving the men she drove straight home and went to the telephone. In a few minutes she was talking to the proprietor of an exclusive and expensive rest cure sanitarium. “Four days?” the voice came back over the wire. “But that is a very short _MOVING, PACKING & STORAGE. She gave him both her hands. “My, but it is good to see you.” Richard looked at her. “You're look- ing wonderful, Anne. Like a girl—" “Again,” Anne flashed a smile at him. “I've been getting sicker and sicker of the pace the crowd goes, it takes the life out of one. How would you like to dine here and just spend the evening with me?” “I'd like it,” Ri ly. “I thought yo gayer, though.” “Another time, Dick. The evening that followed she was the gay- and most daring of the crowd that gathered around them at the night club where they went after the theater. “Looks like Anne was out for a kill-, ing—hear Dick has shipped his little French wife back home for good,” one of the crowd observed under the cover of the music. “Poor Dick. He'll probably fall hard after all the virtue he's practiced for the last seven or eight years,” prophe- sied the listener. In the weeks that followed Dick saw a dozen Annes. She rode with him, played tennis and golf, danced with him. talked books with him, made fun of him, flirted madly under his very nose with younger men—but not once did she permit him the slightest open- ing for lovemaking. It was as though she herself had placed between them the barrier of Yvonne's helplessness. Richard came to feel for Anne the deep respect that in a man of his type precedes emotion. Anne bided her time, but she was never in doubt of the final result. PULPIT APPEALING T0 CHINESE WOMEN: Theological Schools Attracting Girl Students as Feminist Move- ment Spreads. NANKING (#).—The feminist move- ment in China, extending rapidly, has reached theological education. Three women have enrolled in the reopened Nanking Theological Seminary as regu- |lar students. Heretofore the halls of this institution have been for men only. The Nanking incident of March, 1927, when foreigners were attacked by Chi- nese solders, forced the closing of the seminary, not only foreign members of the faculty being driven away, but also some of the Chinese teachers. Since that time various teachers have been gradually drifting back here awaiting' the time until the school could be re- opened. Until a few weeks ago the huiglnn were used as military bar- racks. ‘The Nanking authorities finally man- aged to force the military from the buildings and the school reopened. ‘There was an encouring enrollment of old and new students, and among the latter came the three young women. All of them are college graduates, desiring. | a religious education before they them- | selves begin teaching in missionary | schools. ’ As a result of the enroliment of the ! feminine students which has been re- [ceived as an innovation by the men | rather than with opposition, as was ex- ! pected, it is planned to attempt to at- tract additional girl students and thus ’mmhm};n: ncz %l;npmn the ly cl an vel g edu procedure in China. = —— AMERICANS BUILD COURSE Wild, Desolate Thracian Area’ Made Somewhat Like Home.
