Special Dispatch to The ln;“ it NEW YORK, Decem! . —En- couraged by the showing the market had made in the face of the money stringency, stocks today exhibited a generally strong tone. There was a good deal of selling by traders, who wished to even up accounts over the week end, but it was well absorbed. The important changes were still on the side of advance. General Electric was again a feature, setting a new high for the present shares and in effect for all time as it sold above 220. United States Steel was well supported around the 160 level. Chesapeake & Ohio, which had gone ahead so rapidly Friday, set another new peak for the year, and this time took Chesapeake Corporation along, al- though not to record levels. It was the buying in stocks of this callber which gave the market so impressive an ap- Dearance. Motors Active. More attention was paid to the motors in anticipation of the annual exhibitions. The low priced Jordan was taken in large blocks, up nearly two points. Chrysler forged ahead and Hud- son and Hupp were moderately higher. Willys Overland was the real leader. The turnover in this Was enor- mous and accompanied estimates that production for the year will set a new record. Johns-Manville crossed $200 a share for the first time. Wright Aeronautical had one of its characteristic run-ups of over 10 points. International Har- vester gained about as much and Radio went along with the others. Leader- ship of the public utilities rested in Columbia Gas, although Public Service of New Jersey held practically all of the remarkable advance it had-made yesterday. Among the rails Pennsylvania stood out within a fraction of its previous top. It attracted all the more atten- tion because Pennsylvania is normally a slow mover. The possibility of divi- dend increase was mentioned in con- nection with the buying. Coppers Are Strong. ‘The sugar stocks responded i larly to low, while Cuba Cane preferred was advancing.- American Sugar & Refin- ing was strong on the theory that divi-| dends will be resumed early in 1929. Copper stocks were strong, with American Smelting & Refining feature. Up over 10 points, at 290, it was at the highest in the history of the company. Anaconda and Cerro de Pasco advances and the others in the group were in good nine-month statement of Chile Cop per showed a net profit of $13.826,336, com- || pared with $8,367,977 in the first nine months of 1927.
