FIN CONVERTIBLE BOND TRADING IS ACTIVE Less Selling Is Noted During Short Session—U. S. Issues Quiet. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Ditvatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 29.—Less Yquidation occurred in honds today than at other times during the week, and there were sections of the market where it appeared that investors were cautiously picking up some of the is- sues that have been discarded recently gnd have dropped to a favorable income asis. ‘The buying of United States Govern- ment issues, which was a prominent feature of yesterday's market, was not repeated, and some members of this group declined slightly. The volume of trading fell off sharply. Convertible bonds were the center of ettraction in the domestic list. Andes Copper 7s advanced 3 points and at 225 compared with the redemption price of 110, which is effective January 1. Probably some of the holders of these bonds will neglect to take advan- tage of their opportunity and thereby miss a big premium, as always happens in a situation of this short, Anaconda Copper 7s were likewise strong and Public Service of New Jersey 4l5s con- tinued their rise, which has been 15 points in the past two days. The Seaboard issues were heavy, the refunding 4s off 1!, points and the Florida 6s skirting their previous low level. Florida East Coast 5s rose a point. Various new rail 4}ss were fractionally lower. St. Paul adjustments moved up fractionally. ‘There was considerable irregularity in the foreign group, with European issues inclined to sag off, but with some re- covery in South Americans, COTTON MARKET QUIET. NEW YORK, December 29 (#)—The cotton market was very quiet today, and the narrow fluctuations were at- tributed chiefly to evening up of com- mitments for over the week end and the approaching holiday. After selling up to 20.26 during the earlier trading, March declined to 20.21 and closed at 20.23. The gencral market closed :;udy. net 2 points higher to 2 points wer. SILVER QUOTATIONS. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 29.—Public utilities were brought to the front at the close of the week on the curb ex- change. Prominent holding company issues were bid up sharply, several of them to new high records for the aresent share capitalization. The mar- et (enenlly gave a good account of Ulfll!l!! were discounting the highly prosperous year enjoyed by the industry and the prospect of continued expand- ing operations in 1929. Gross revenues for the electric power and light industry alone are estimated at approximately $1,875,000,000 for the year, with financ- ing placed at $1,900,000,000. Electric Bond & Share securities shot forward to a new top above 180% Northeastern Power reached a new high above 57, compared with Priday's | close of 551;. Ail classes of American Super Power moved upward substantial- ly and American Gas & Electric gained more than a point. Airplane issues were also favored, notably North American Aviation, Aviation Corporation of America and Niles-Bement-Pond, the first two attain- ing new highs. In the oil group Vacuum maintained leadership, reaching its best above 111, Specialties which established new tops included Goldmann, Sachs Trading, Dominion Stores, Nelsner Brothers and Roan Antelope. Ford Motor, Ltd., after opening frac- tionally lower on a block of 7,200 shares, continued in supply whenever bids came into the market undzr the 20 level. WHEAT PRICES DROP. CHICAGO, December 20 (4#).—Under pressure of general selling, all wheat tumbled down today to within a frac- tion of the lowest level yet this season. Deliveries here on December wheat con- tracts foday were on a large scale, totaling 804,000 bushels, and this cir- cumstance together with smallness of ex- port demand today for wheat frqm North America led to the execution of numerous standing orders to_sell out and thus put a stop to losses.
