L BANDITS OPEN SAF BUT GET NO FUNDS Enter Office of Harry W. Tay- lor, Inc., as Watch- man Rests. Forcing the lock and chains on a rear doom, bandits entered the office of Harry W. Taylor, Inc., last night and forced open the safe while the watch- man rested on the floor above. The efforts of the robbers in gaining en- trance to the shop and safe proved futile as it was customary to remove all funds from it before closing the office at night. On rare occasions when money was left there over night & watchman stood guard over it with cocked revolver until morning. John A. Paddy, aged watchman, said that he made his rounds at 8:30, turn- ng off all lights except the one in the vear office. He then retired to his room on the second floor, leaving the door open. Between 11 and 12 o'clock he heard the sounds he later learned were made by the robbers, but suspected that they were caused by a passing street car and so_made no investigation at that time. Later, when making his rounds, he discovered the robbery and notified police. At an early hour this morning Paddy had not called Mrs. V. A. Hamilton, president and manager of the firm, as she was indisposed, and he did not be- lieve that there was reason to alarm her, no money having been taken. J. F. Wheeler, 221 A street northeast, fore- man of the shop, verified the statement that nothing of value had been taken. SUSPECTED HUACKER FRIGHTENS AUTOISTS Policeman in “Civvies” Finally Has to Fire Twice to Stop Fleeing Car. A policeman in civilian clothes, and wearing a lumberman’s jacket, looked ®® much like a hijacker to two motor- ists that the officer was forced to fire his revolver at them twice before they ‘would stop, according to testimony of- fered in Traffic Court yesterday in the case of Bernard Boone, 600 block of ‘Tennessee avenue northeast, charged with reckless driving. Boone and his brother, who is a constable at Forestville, Md., were en- tering the District via Good Hope road southeast when they passed an auto- mobile in which Policeman De Vaughan of the fourth precinct was a passenger. Suspecting the car contained liquor, De Vaughan gave chase. The car eluded the officers, however, and returned into Maryland. Some time later De Vaughan noticed the car as it was again entering the District on Pennsylvania avenue southeast. By that time the policeman had changed his mind, he said, and suspected it was driven by revenue men. It stopped this time at his signal, but when he approached the driver it sped away a second time. ‘Thereupon the officer jumped back in his car, started in pursuit, and finally halted Boone with two shots. On close questioning by Judge John P. McMahon, defens> witnesses admitted they thought De Vaughan “might have been a rob- ber,” and said they tried to entice him back into Maryland where the con- stable had some authority. Judge McMahon fined Boone $25 for reckless driving on the testimony that he violated several traffic reguiations while within the District. The constable, Wilbur Boone, was :l\ned 851 by Ju;lntouhi A. Schuldt on a isorderly conduct char; win of the traffic arrest. ety Lieut. Filgate Quits Army. Resignation of First. Lieut. John T. At least that was the explanation given by Tony when he pleaded guilty to intoxication before Judge Gus A. Schuldt in Police Court. Ordinary corn liquor has no ef- fect on him, but when a Kkindly woman at the institution where Tony works offered him some Christmas champagne, he said, she also wl'x_‘ned it was “likely to trip up. Still it wasn't the champagne half as much as a nail which “worked up” in his heel, Tony insisted, that caused him to stagger and be ar- rested. Judge Schuldt offered sympathy for “such an expensive nail” and imposed a fine of $10. —_— GRAYSON DEPARTS. Admiral Leaves to Make Address at Havana. Admiral Cary T.
