ON QUICK DIVORCES Repeal Proposed of Law Which Places Reno Resi- dence at Three Months. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. RENO, Nev., December 27.—No longer will Reno be the haven of divorce seek- ers, with the lure of only a three-month residence requirement, if a determined effort to repeal the present law suc- ceeds at the forthcoming session of the Nevada Legislature, Speaker D. C. Tandy of the Assembly and other prominent legislators have made it known that they will endeavor to effect repeal of the three-month law and restore the former act necessitat- ing six months’ legal residence for those seeking to break the bonds of matri- mony in Nevada courts. Resentment against the present law, which was rushed through in the closing hours of | the last Legislature two years ago, has been steadily growing among real resi- dents of Nevada and influential ele- ments are lning up against its con- tinuance without regard to any con- vulitnce it offers too citizens of other tes. See State in Bad Repute. Opponents of the three-month resi- dence requirement contend it has broughtt the State into bad repute and has also failed to bring the expected rush of profitable business to Reno and other Nevada towns. It is asserted that it has brought undesirables to Reno, resulted in flagrant infractions of the law and generally proved anything but desirable. A telling argument against the three- month provision is, though it has in- creased divorces here, it has not stim- ulated business to any marked extent. It is stated that it has actvally re- stricted the profis of Reno merchtants. It has been found that residents for divorce only spend little money for clothing, jewelry and amusement, and with only a three-month stay ahead of them, show a tendency to rent low- priced apartments in preference to ex- pensive homes. Divorces in Nevada in 1927 num- bered more than 1,900, gaining about 900 over 1926, but incomplete returns for 1928 indicate a decline from the 1927 record. These figures include a considerable number of working people, who have sought employment and created a sur- plus of labor, Reno to Fight Repeal. Opposition to repeal of the three- month hw will be made by Reno's legal fraternity, numbering 200 in a population of 15,000. Many of them depend largely upon divorces for a iive- lihood and any plan which threatens to curtail the business quickly brings pro- tests. On the other hand, however, sev- eral leaders of the Reno bar favor re- peal of the law. The battle over the &uuthn promises o be stirring when e Legislature convenes in January.
