BLAZE IN APARTMENT CAUSES $500 DAMAGE Fire in Unoccupied Suite Discov- ered by Elevator Operator. F¥our Engines Respond. Damage estimated at $500 was done by & fire early last night in the kitchen of the apartment of M. B. Strickley in the Cumberland Apartments at Thomas ['the sixth floor, Circle. The occupants of the apartment were away for the Christmas hioidays. The fire was discovered by Robert Smith, 18-year-old colored elevator boy, who lives at 308 T street. Smith had run his elevator to the seventh floor, where he smelled smoke. He went to where the Strickley apartment is located, and traced the smoke to the door. Finding it impos- sible to force the lock of the door, he seized a fire ax from the wall and smashed the panels. With difficulty he groped his way to the kitchen through the smoke and located the blaze. Then he ran back to the hall, THE EVENING went to the first floor in his elevator and turned in the alarm. Four fire engines were on the scene within less than 10 minutes and the fire was soon under control. Only the kitchen was damaged. The origin of the fire has not been determined. .. IOWA CITY, Iowa (#).—Skilled me- chanics and professional men get the biggest laughs from the newspaper comics. George H. Gallup of the University of Towa School of Journalism so declares after a survey of newspaper readers. This is true, he says, because in the “funnies” these workers find quick di- version from exacting duties. News sec- tions are sought more eagerly by men than by women, the atter, however, finding most of interest in the adver- tisements, he says. He questloned 1,500 persons.
