FOOTPRINTS RAISE HOPES FR EOUPLE = Hyde and Wife Missing 41 Days as Search of Can- yons Is Intensified. By the Associated Press. GRAND CANYON, Ariz, December 25—Footprints at the bottom of the mile-deep Grand Canyon gorge of the Colorddo River indicated today to searchers that Glenn Hyde of Hansen, Idaho, and his adventurous bride push- ed their “thrill trip” as far as Ruby Canyon Rapids before they disappeared. The Hydes started 67 days ago to “float down the treacherous Colorado in a homemade scow as a thrill for Mrs. Hyde. Forty-one days ago they were seen at Bright Angel, in the heart of the river's dangerous rapids. Since then the great canyon has dropped a veil of mystery over them, only partly plerced by Army aviators, who found the Hydes’ stranded scow at Separation Rapids. Hope for Pair Revived. Further word was received here last night of the discovery of footprints, presumably those of Hyde, at Bass Cable crossing and at Ruby Canyon Rapids. This point is below the place where the scow was located. The teport of the discovery of the footprints, constituting the first tan- gible evidence that the Hydes presum- ably were safe when the scow was abandoned, was brought here by P. P. Papraw of the Grand Canyon National Park staff. Papraw last week headed a boat party which set out for Separation Rapids, where the scow was seen. He came upon the foot- prints in the mud of the narrow river . The marks indicated, Papraw believed, that the young man had step- ashore té survey the dangerous waters ahead. Another searching party, headed by Emrey Kolb, Colorado River pioneer, left Diamond Creek yesterday in a crudely constructed boat to search the 13 miles between Dismond Creek and Separation Rapids. Expect Report Thursday. Failing to find traces of the ven- turesome oouple, Kolb's party planned to salvage the camp equipment from the stranded scow, which was reported by the Army aviators to be intact. Kolb and his men then are to proceed 13 miles farther down stream, where a pack horse party will meet them. No further word is expected from Kclb until Thursday. | BOYS TO BE GUESTS. At Fourteenth and D streets the car stopped for gasoline, and the firemen, hurrying up, told the driver he would have to go to No.4. He couldn't see it that way, whereupon, the firemen say, they “simply took him there.” At the police station the motorist de- scribed himself as Carlin Clifton Poland, 20 years old, a carpenter, of the 1300 block of Twenty-ninth street.
