THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1928, UNKNOWN SOLDIER * DESCH SELECTED Completion of Tomb Waits on Appropriations by Congress. Becretary Dwight F. Davis yesterday selected the design for the completion of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier submitted by Thomas Hudson Jones, sculptor, and Lorimer Rich, architect, both of New York. This design was one selected by a jury of award from 73 placed in competition and has also received the approval of the Fine Arts Commission, the American Battle Mon- uments Commission and the Arlington Cemetery Commission. Work on com- pletion of the tomb will start as soon as Congress appropriates funds which have already been authorized. By the act of July 3, 1926, Congress limited the authorized total cost of the memorial and of the designs to $50,000, and it is estimated that of this sum $44,000 will be available for the actual fabrication and erection of the memo- rial. As soon as funds become available, a formal contract will be made with the winners for the preparation of the necessary plans and specifications and for supervision of erection, for which & commission of 8 per cent of the amount of the contract will be paid. | ‘The $2,500 appropriated has been used in conjunction with the competition and it is thought that Congress will now appropriate the balance without delay, probably incorporating the sum into the War Department supply bill. | Report Transmitted. While the selection was being dis- | tussed, President Coolidge transmitted | to Congress a communication accom- | panying the annual report of the com- mission on the erection of memorials and entombment of bodies in the Arlington Memorial _ Amphitheater, inviting attention of Congress to the commission’s recommendation that “the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier be com- leted and that the balance of the 50,000 authorized for the completion of said tomb, $47,500, is carried in the nxggg't estimates for the fiscal year The President's message was referred, ‘with uccomgnymg papers, by Speaker Longworth the committee on public Wuildings and grounds. SR |“SILENT SALESMEN” AID HEALTH DRIVE Association Places Tuberculosis Coin Boxes in Stores to Facili- tate Christmas Seal Buying. A small army of “silent salesmen” | were today enlisted In the various chain stores throughout the city in the form | of self-service coin | boxes for the sale of the Christmas Health Seals of the Tuberculosis Association with the hope of fur- ther speeding the annual seal sale toward its still dis- tant goal of four million penny seals sold. ‘These self-service stations were in- stalled during the day by the manage- ment in several chain store organiza- tions. With each silent sales coin box is displayed the Santa Claus poster in bright colors with the word “For Sale Here” printed thereon and in the box placed a sheaf of holly-decked en- velopes, each holding 10 of the penny Christmas Seals. The purchaser drops a dime in the slot for each envelope taken out of the box. ‘Tomorrow the Christmas Seal sales force is to be further augmented by the teams of volunteer ladies in charge of special booths to be set up in the larger department stores and in a number of bank lobbies. In the meantime the returns from the mail sale are continuing at a lively pace which keeps the cashier busy at the Social Service House, 1022 Eleventh street, headquarters for the seal sale, Creator of Grant Statue. ‘The successful sculptor, Mr. Jones, lives in New York City.
