28 STIDENT RNKING CHARGESDISPTED University of Virginia Presi- | dent Takes Issue With Anti- Saloon League Head. By the Associated Press. RICHMOND. Va., December 4.—Stu- dents at the University of Virginia have been charged with excessive drinking and thir peresident, Dr. Edwin A. Ai- derman, has come to their defense. Following publication of a letter by | the Rev. David Hepburn, superintendent | of the Virginia Anti-Saloon League, to | Gov. Byrd of Virginia, in which he said that reports indicated that drink- | ing at the school amounted to a State- wide scandal, Dr. Alderman replied that liquor consumption at Virginia was no greater than at other similar institu- tions. He also declared emphatically that in no sense was it entitled to be characterized as a State-wide sca i Dr. Hepburn called upon Gov. Byrd | to permit Federal prohibition agents | uninterrupted access to the university | grounds, fraternity houses and student body as bootleggers are now reported to have. He explained that the purpose | of the agents would not be to punish drinking professors or students, but to protect them from bootleggers. Gov. Byrd said -that he would refer Dr. Hepburn's letter when it was re- ceived to Dr. Alderman, as was custom- ary in such cases. Dr. Hepburn mentioned no specific reports of drinking, but a statement commenting on drinking among_stu- dents had been made after the North Carolina-Virginia foot ball game by a Fredericisburg minister. The Anti-Saloon League official said the authorities had shown no disposi- tion to improve conditions at the school. He also declared that the homor sys: tem at Virginia was “obsolete and false” and protected the lawless liquor ele- ment, Dr. Alderman, in his reply, said that university authorities were engaged in a constant effort to promote sobriety.
