Total net earnings of the Capital | Traction Co. for the month of October showed a slight gain over the corre- sponding month in 1927, but the net |income for the first 10 months of the present year revealed a decline over the same pi riod last year, ac- cording to reports filed today with the Public Utilities ‘Commission. The company's operating revenues | inOctober amount- ed to $377,300.24, in comparison with $379,333.18 a year § ago. The small falling off in oper- ating revenues was offset, however, by Eara Gould. I"lower operating ex- penses, this item totaling * $256,792.95, against $258,418.56 in October last year. Deduction -of expenses left an oper- ating income for the month of $91,819.03 against "$88,410.75 in October, 1927. Atter all other deductions the net in- come for the month stood at $67,058.58 compared with $64.860.15, or a net gaii of $2,198.43 over the corresponding pe- |riod a year ago. Total revenue passen- gers for the month numbered 5,112,511, against 5,179,767 in October, 1927. Traction’s Ten Months' Earnings. year amounted to $3,613,504.10, against the higher figure last year of $3,69: 647.78. The company's operating ex penses totaled $2,540,932.30, compared With $2.580,247.89 in the corresponding period last year. Deduction of operating expenses for the period left a net operating income | of $783,393.24, against $808,249.78 a year ago. After the usual other deduc- tions, the company reported a total net income of $515,988.57, in comparison with a total net last year of $557,502.43, or a falling off of $41,513.86. Reports on the number of revenue passengers carried on tne Capital Trac- tion lines during the 10 months are also included. Up to the end of October | this year, 48,824,103 persons paid fares, while during the same period last year the total number of revenue passen- gers was 50,435.983, this difference in passenger traffic, of course, being largely responsible for the falling off | in net earnings. i Gould Congratulated on Changes. Ezra Gould, president of the Wash- ington Mechanics Savings Bank, is re- | ceiving hearty congratulations on the completion of the extensive changes at the branch on Georgia avenue. A Mr. Gould founded this bank in 1906 and the institution has never had any other president. Steady growth has justified his_policy of leadership. ‘The Washington banker was born here, but spent his boyhood on his father's farm in Virginia. At the age of 17 he migrated to the Capital with just 70 cents in his pocket. His first position was in the Washington Navy Yard, where he intended to become a mechanical engineer, at the same time studying nights at George Washington University. Later, however, he changed his mind and entered the banking field. Call money was marked up to 10 per | cent again today after having renewed at 8 and experienced an intermediate ‘When the high rate was reached, funds flowed into the market and prevented any further ad- vance. It was hard to say whether or not money was any factor in halting the upward movement. Traders paid no attention to the increase in brokers’ loans announced overnight by the Stock Exchange. The motor stocks resisted the selling ticularly true of the shares of the in- | dependent companies. Copper stocks, on the other hand, sagged easily. The market had two developments in the railroad field before it, but neither seemed to influence it much. One was the putting of Missouri Pacific preferred on a dividend basis and the other was the announcement that the National City Co. had distributed to its invest- ment customers a large block of Balti- more & Ohio stock. In the early trading improvement was recorded in nearly all groups. Rail- roads were not quite so active as indus- trials, but they worked higher. Inde- pendent motors were especially strong.
