Bank President Nearly 20 Years. ‘William D. Hoover, president of the National Savings & Trust Co., is now rounding out 20 years' service as head of the institution. Mr. Hoover took the helm in January, 1909. For seven years prior to that time he was con- nected with the bank in the capacity of attorney and trust officer, to which position he was elected in 1902. Before associating himself with the National Savings & Trust,” Mr. Hoover was for five years vice president and director of the Real Estate Title In- surance Co., still retaining membership on the board. Born and educated in the National Capital, he is a graduate of the Georgetown University Law School. After being admitted to the District of Columbia courts he decided not to enter private practice, but to use his legal knowledge in service of the financial institutions wtih which he has been connected. Mr. Hoover is a thirty-second degree Mason, member of the University Club, a leader in the Chevy Chase Club, as well as a member of the Metropolitan, Lawyers’ and other similar organiza- tions. He attends the Episcopal Church. Under his leadership his bank has shown splendid growth. Heard in Financial District. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. | NEW YORK, November 15—Some- what chastened by the knowledge that the weekly statement of brokers’ loans to be given out after the close was almost certain to show a large increase, speculation in stocks proceeded this morning at a more moderate pace. The turnover was almost as large as in the preceding session, but the market lacked the wild character it had dis- played and net changes, even in the h priced leaders, were not as large. Individual issues made new highs at the start. The steel stocks were among the leaders. United States Steel above 170 was at & new top, and although the advance brought in heavy realizing it held fairly well. Bethlehem Steel was outstandingly strong, making a new peak above 73. Resumption of divi- Y dends on Bethlehem has long been redicted and it now looks as though he prediction would be realized. Re- public Iron & Steel and Sloss Sheffield, the last named neglected of late, par- ticipated in the improvement. In the mail order group National Bellas Hess was the feature. The stock had gone up 13 points the day before and it added to that gain at the open- ing today, crossing 170 to the best since listing. Another stock which had been a favorite yesterday was Westinghouse Flectric, and it too pushed ahead vigor- ously today for a gain of some 4 points, crossing 132, a new record. Motor stocks were irregular. Hudson, which had gone up so fast the day be- fore, met profit taking. Mack Trucks dropped back below 100. Chrysler and General Motors held their own in the early trading, but did little more. Stewart Warner fluctuated around the preceding close, although i% did make a new high at the start. The old standbys, Radlo, Montgomery Ward and Sears Roebuck, worked lower as speculators transferred their atten- tion to new favorities. The oils were well bought at moderately higher levels. Standard Oil of New Jersey bettered its previous high by a fraction and Na- tional Supply moved up under the im- petus of the favorable third quarter earnings statement, The Tobacco shares were taken up today. Universal Leaf advanced easily :n I;’ sma:l zumov:r lr;mi what appeared 0 be Investment bu came into American Tobacco. v The rails were quict and little changed. Northern Pacific was in de- mand for a time, surpassing the best previous price for the year, above 106. Money renewed at 6 per cent and the tone was firm. There was some calling of loans by the banks in connection with midmonth requirements. Baltimore Markets Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Md., November 15.
