His task was asknowledged to be most difficuit, and it was not expected that he would suc- ceed before the end of the week. Raymond Poincare, who resigned as premier after he had found it impos- sible to agree to the program of four gadical members of his cabinet, was un- Kerstood to be still resolved not to as- sume office again. It was hoped that the could be persuaded to reconsider this decision. The press and the public ap- peared to be insistent that Poincare re- sume the reins. INDIANA AND KENTUCKY DISPUTE ON OHIO BRIDGE gk o Changes in Course of River Cause Controversy Likely to Get in TU. S. Supreme Court, EVANSVILLE, Ind, (#).—The aim- fless wanderings of the Ohio River have placed Indiana on the negative side bf a bridge building proposition which the State fostered, appropriating funds to finance half the structure. The unusual situation was brought ibout when a group of Indiana citizens enjoined the State from spending money for the bridge. They contended the river had changed its course and that a bridge at this point on the river would e on Kentucky soil. Kentucky was forced to file suit fagainst the citizens and Indiana to compel the completion of the bridge project. Action by the United States Supreme Court will end the controversy. For many years there has been a clamor in Indiana and Kentucky for ¢ bridge at Evansville, which is on one of the most popular highways for north and south traffic. The structure would cost $4,000,000. The States wrangled over each other’s burden. Kentucky at one time held that Indiana should bear more than half the cost because the river was on the Indiana side. Before that could be settled the Ohio shifted to the Kentucky bottoms. In 1925, Indiana approved payment of half the cost and a year later Kentucky assented. FIRE LOSS $1,000,000. Buffalo Has Most Disastrous Con- flagration in Years. BUFFALO, N.
