Alfred E. Smith carried Rhode Island by 1.493 votes. After a night of doubt, during which the ultimate outcome could not be guessed, the final figures were Smith, 118951; Hoover, 117,458. It was not until the vote of 194 of the State's 196 precincts had been compiled at 4:40 o'clock this morning that Smith gained a lead of 2728 votes over Herbert Hoover, a lead which the latter cut down but could not erase. The big surprise of the election, in view of Gov. Smith's victory, was the defeat of United States Senator Peter G. Gerry for re-election. Senator Gerry, chairman of the advisory board of the Democratic national committee, was expected to poll a heavier vote than Smith, but instead lost to Felix Hebert by a margin of 2,991. The vote was Hebert, 119,056; Gerry, 116,085. The results of other important con- tests were- as follows: Congress—First district, Buidick (Republican), 41,919; Cooney ~(Democrat), 33,844, Second district, Aldrich (Republican), 43,750; Light Mowry (Democrat), 35,122. Third dis- trict, O'Connell (Democrat), 45,170; through Cruzite - lenses, Monast (Republican), 34,005. For governor—Case (Republican), 121, 488; Archambault (Democrat), 113,426. ALEXANDRIA. This is attributed to the fact that a great majority of the people interested in the returns remained at their homes and heard the radio reports. A warrant for his arrest was sworn out by Joseph P. Krukin of Norfolk, who told police Smith stole approximately $200 worth of clothes from his automobile.
