CARR, Secretary ADIOURN HEARINGS ON GAS VALUATION Utilities Commission to Re- sume Case Wednesday. Split on Depreciation. Public hearings on the valuation of the Washington and Georgetown Gas Light Companies before the Public Utilities Commission will be resumed at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. adjourned yesterday after completion of testimony as to depreciation by R. O. Luqueer, engineer retained by the companies to make an appraisal of their properties. The delay was de- signed to allow People’s Counsel Ralph V. Fleharty an opportunity to organ- ize his case before he starts cross- examination on the lengthy testimony of the company’s expert. At the hearings yesterday Swagar Sherley, .counsel for the companies, stated that they would need at least 16 more days for the introduction of direct evidence on the valuation of the ‘Washington Gas Light Co. Taking into consideration the time needed for cross-examination, re-direct and re- cross-examination, the time needed for the presentation of the Georgetown Co.’s case in its entirety, the time needed for argument of the cases and several necessary adjournments to allow the commission to attend to other business, it will probably take at least two months more to complete the case. Luqueer's depreciation testimony will be the center of one of the big bat- tles of the case. H. Carl Wolf, engi- neer employed by the commission to make an appraisal of the properties, estimated that they had suffered de- preciation amounting to _$2,800,000. Lugueer's corresponding figure was $829,710. Since the figure for depreciation must be subtracted from the figure deter- mined as cost to reproduce the plant new in the final valuation, it is seen that the two sides are at odds by $2,000,000 on a single item of atotal valuation, which, according to Lu- queer’s figure, amounts to $27,444,810. After being mustered out of service the same year, Howard went to Sterling City, Tex., and built the first house in the West Texas town. - War survivors of the siege are remaining William Fitzhugh, 100, Paris, Mo., and Owen Thomas Edgar, 97, Washington. Resolutions adopted by the associa- tion point out that the bridge has hot been enlarged or materially strength- ened since its erection' 30 years ago, and that it is now unsafe under the loads to which it is subjected during rush hours. The narrowness of the bridge, the association said, also creates serious traffic congestion during the rush hours, The resolutions were signed by R. C. Lynch, president, and C. B. CHICAGO, November 2.—The gun that “wasn’t loaded” had another notch today. Morton Kazanow had taken a pistol to the home of his sweetheart, Marle Gray, 24, to be used to protect her from burglars. “But I'm afraid of it,” Miss Gray said. “It cannot harm you,” Kazanow as- sured her. “See,” and he emptied the bullets onto the table. Still she was un- convinced. “Do not be afraid, it cannot hurt you now,” sald Kazanow, and to show her he placed the muzzle against her fore- head and pulled the trigger. A bullet that had remained in the gun killed her instantly. Police are investigating his story.
