Wholesale Trade Lags ‘Wholesale trade in the United States continued in approximately the same volume in September as in August. Vhen allowance is made for the sea- sonal increase, however, wholesale sales in nine lines reporting to the Federal Reserve System showed a decline of 4 per cent from August. Meat packing and furniture firms reported the largest increases in sales in September, compared with the pre- ceding month, while sales of boots and shoes showed largest decline. In comparison with the same month a year previous, the volume of whole- sale distribution in September was slightly smaller, Seven of the nine re- lines showed decreases in sales, varying from less than 2 per cent in the case of groceries to about 14 per cent in the case of shoes, while meat packing and furniture firms showed substantial increases. Copper Improvement Held Marvelous. “The recent impressive improvement of the copper market refiects the emer- gence of the industry from a condition of chaos into one of stability,” says the Union Trust Co., Cleveland. “This bet- terment is not a mere temporary condi- n. “The great change in the copper trade has been brought about by the combined efforts of the important fac- tors in the industry over the last seven years,” says the bank in its business. magazine, Trade Winds. “The industry has attained high efficiency 'in both its producmm and marketing operations. “The immediate causes of such im- provement are to be found in the de-, cided increase both in domestic and in’ outside wprld demand, and in a rational production progran.. These factors have served to reduce copper stocks and to induce firmdr markets. “In the fleld of production prices are still close to the prewar figure, while wages, material and transportation range from 50 to 100 per cent above their prewar levels. The ability of the industry to show profitable operations in the face of this situation reflects marvelous achievements in cutting pro- duction costs.” Heard in Financial District. Herbert C. Harris of 2007 R street has been appointed manager for the ‘Washington district of the Fidelity Investment Association, which has of- fices in the Commercial National Bank building. He is the youngest man the company has yet promoted to this po- sition, being only 28 years old. He is a former student at Emerson Institute, George Washington and Northwestern Universities. STOCKS HOLD FIRM INEARLY TRADING Brokers’ Loans Statement Apparently Discounted; Gen- eral Motors Eases Off. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Spectal Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 2.—The main body of stocks this morning withstood fairly well the test of another huge in- crease in the latest weekly Federal Re- serve brokers' loans statement. Under ordinary conditions an advance of more than $134,000000 in the item would have been sufficient cause for hurried liquidation, in that it plainly indicated heavy distribution during the period covered. The market, however, followed the usual procedure of ignoring the significance attached to the increase. The prominent industrials opened ir- regularly, fluctuated nervously during the first half session and were inclined to work toward slightly lower levels thereafter. No wide-open break oc- curred in prices and every effort was put forth by the element favoring high- er prices to sustain public confidence. Interest in Motors. General Motors, which had been brought to the front in the late trad- ing yesterday, sold within a bare fraction of its highest for the present shares, then lost more than the early improvement. Interest centered on the action to be taken at the com- ing dividend meeting and predictions were heard of a split-up in the ratio of two for one, with a stock dividend and a higher rate for the new shares. Chrysler continued under presurctat Stu- debaker was pressed for sale at inter- vals and other independents did little | one way or the other. U. 8. Steel was well maintainec around 162, where it was down only slightly, but the independent steel stocks lost a good deal of the buoy- ancy that characterized operations earlier in the week. The effect of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s electrification plan upon such issues as Public Ser- vice of New Jersey and Westinghouse Electric appeared to have spent itself yesterday. The latter was down more than a point most of the session, while activity in Public Service dwindied. Sinclair Consolidated again monopo- lized speculative attention in the oil group. The enormous turnover at the highest price since 1921, above 44, was accompanied by reports that Cutten in- terests had bid this price for a block of 100,000 shares. Maryland was attrac- tive from a prospective earnings stand- point and was thought to be behind the market for other oils. Among specialties American Interna- tional was prominent. Holland Fur- nace, recently transferred from the Curb Market, was carried to a new top above 50. Profit-taking made itself felt in the metal group, although offerings were well absorbed. Express Company Shares. Shares of express companies, notably American Express, were bid up sharply. The rubbers failed to be influenced by the recent tire price cut announcement. Such issues as United States Rubber and Kelley-Springfield were bid up ag- gressively as the result of heavy short covering. More significance was at- tached to the removal of the Steven- son_restrictions and the effect it is likely to have upon domestic rubber companies. Call money again renewed at 7} per cent and was in good supply. The mar- ket for time funds remained dull, with the tone somewhat easier. SILVER QUOTATIONS.
