TRANELP CHARGE 5 HADE B LN G. 0. P. Publicity Director Ac- cuses Raskob of Manu- facturing Evidence. By the Assoclated Press. Asserting that “the Tammany cam- in its closing hours has sunk from the sidewalks to the sewers of New_ York,” Henry J. Allen, director of Republican publicity, has accused Chairman John J. Raskob and the Democratic national committee of “manufacturing evidence” to support the charge that attacks upon Gov. Al- fred E. Smith because of his religion may be traced to Republican campaign officials. In a statement isswed for publica~ tion today Allen denounced as a sus- pected * e-up” the set of docu- ments made public by Raskob as part of an open letter to Chairman Work of the Republican national committee, which the Democratic leader declared proved that his claims were true. Charges Attacks on Hoover. Moreover, Allen charged Raskob with “an obvious effort to make the widest use of bigotry in his own campaign while denouncing its pretended pres- ence in the Republican campaign.” He |} declared, too, that Raskob had given tacit approval to attacks on Herbert Hoover because of his Quake faith. Referring to the documents made public by Raskob, Allen said that all the aMdavits they contained were ng which Raskob has attributed to him. ‘These considerations, Allen said, arouse “the suspicion that the whole case is a ‘frame-up’” He characterized as “a mere mask to hide his own mud- guns” Raskob'’s early appeal for a clean campaign. “All efforts to link the Republican party with the religious issue having falled because of the refusal of the Republican party to countenance the lpgeal to bigotry,” Allen said, “the com- mitte of Raskob has deliberately de- scended to the Tammany trick of manu- facturing evidence for their own use.” ‘The Republican publicity director de- clared that his party leaders had been able “to anticipate most of the Demo- cratic mud by realizing that Raskob al- ways uses reverse English on every statement,” adding that whenever the Democratic chairman “has accused the Republicans of a trick it has become a forewarning that the Democrats were about to undertake or were already undertaking that particular trick.” Personal Libel Cbarged. Allen asserted that “the recent pre- tended meeting” between Klan and Re- publican leaders in New Jersey had been “easily traced to Democratic headquar- launched by regional committee at St. Louis uj Mr, Hoo- ver's_rel s ter connec- ton he cl others have been personal libel against the ite for President wil and all of this with the direct en- minded of the try.
