An in- creased demand came from dealers who were picking up some of the popular low coupon issucs while the speculative clement was active in various grades of convertibles It is a commentary on the character of the investment demand at present | that the large proportion of this week I new securi | stock warrants attached or straight | issues of common stocks. There was | some expansion in the amount of mu- | nicipal borrowing and also in real estate |1oans, but the outstanding feature was | again the offering of equity propositions | "In the speculative issues the largest | | gains today were in Liquid Carbonic 6s, | Andes Copper 7s and Anaconda Copper 75, which were up from 215 to 3 points. { Barnsdall 6s were off a point and there | was less activity in other oil company | - | convertibles, which have been promi- | nent recently. Among the new highs were Huyler of Delaware up almost 2 points, Roan Antelope up almost 4 points to 31, Na- | tional Sugar of New Jersey up 11 to 170, Sydney Blumenthal almost 3 poinis higher around 71 and Galesburg Coult Discounts almost 10 points up at 112, ‘The manner in which the last named issue moved forward was noteworthy. Opening at its previous high of 108 it compared with yesterday’s final of 102%. Subsequently it jumped from 109% to 112 between sales. In the case of Blu- menthal it was reflecting prospects of increased business as a result of the ad- ditions to its plant at Shelton, Conn., which will provide additional handling and shipping facilities. There was little or no Zenith Radio stock for sale around its peak of 230, where it left off Thursday. Annotnce- ment was made of the proposal to in- crease the common capitalization in order to pave the way for a substantial stock dividend. Immediately follow- ing the meeting of stockholders sched- { uled for October 29, directors will meet and decide upon the amount of:pay- ment. Tubize Artificial Silk attracted at- tention because of the activity in such a high-priced issue. At 560 is com- pared with the previous final of 552. 'WHEAT PRICES DROP IN INITIAL SALES Favorable Crop Conditions in South and Winter Wheat Section Cause Decline. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, October 19.—With excel- lent rains over domestic Winter wheat territory and with favorable crop con- ditions south of the Equator, wheat prices averaged lower today during the early dealings. Besides, export demand for wheat from North America appeared to be confined largely to low-grade Canadian at wide discounts under other sorts. Opening at 'i off to 'y up, wheat later showed some setback all around. Corn started unchanged to % advance, but subsequently declined. Oats were easy. Provisions likewise tended downward. Despite upturns in Liverpool wheat ‘quotations, bears had the advantage much of the time this morning in the wheat market here. Large accummula- tions both in Canada and the United States, together with lack of any sig- nificant improvement in export business, were a handicap to friends of higher prices, and so, too, were auspicious crop prospects in Argentina and Australia. Under such circumstances, future de- livery offerings here from the North- west were a feature, and there was further selling of wheat into store here, In the corn market, a disposition on the part of various influential traders was manifest to hold back from pur- chasing until there is a freer movement of the new crop. Weather conditions today were also reported as more favor- able for handling of corn. On the other hand, corn export buying continued, and it was announced the Spanish gov- ernment had authorized corn imports of 6,000,000 bushels. LUMBER PRODUCTION. By the Associated Tress NEW YORK, October 19.—The cot= ton market opened steady at a decline of 1 point on July, but generally 3 to 6 points -higher in response to relatively steady Liverpool cables and apprehen- sions of lower temperatures in the Southwest. There was a good deal of realizing and considerable Southern selling, but it was absorbed on set- backs of a few points from the open- ing prices, and the market firmed up. with December advancing to 19.80 and March to 19.71, or about 10 to 11 points net higher, by the end of the first half, hour. Private cables said that hedging and some continental selling had been absorbed by trade calling and Bombay buying in Liverpcol, but that the de- mand for cotton oloths was less insist~ ent, with a disinclination to pay cur- rent prices.
