F CRABS PLENTIFUL INLOCAL MARKET Soft Variety of Crustacean Cheap—Spring Broilers Reported Lower. Municipal Fish Market this morning | “was well supplied with a varied assort- ment of marine products, the fish and crabs being of splendid quality and in good supply. according to dealers, and were what dealers termed cheap. ft erab prices dropped as low as 35 cents. Hard crabs are beig caught in large quantities, but for some reason, not many of them are coming here. They #sold around $9 a barrel this morning. Crabmeat was not so plentiful this morning, dealers reported, the best quality meat selling at 70 cents a pound or $3.50 a gallon. Green shrimp were acarce at 30 cents a pound, and there ‘was practically none of the cooked stock to_be had. Lobsters were more plentiful than ever, dealers having large consignments of them from Boston shippers. They were offered at the low price of 40 cents. Clams were plentiful at $1.30 per 100. Few Shad Offered. Very few shad were offered by deal- ers this morning. Roes sold at 65 cents and bucks 32 cents apiece, much higher than last week's prices. Netters are catching large quantities of herring, but not many of them are reaching the local market, possibly because of the cheap ‘prices. Today's price was $1.25 per 100. Rockfish were scarce at 35 cents a | m. while trout, from the lower Po- and Chesapeake Bay. were quoted At from 5 to 20 cents a pound. Porgies, sea bass and flounders were in deman &t 10 cents. BUYING ISBETTER IN BOND MARKET Better Rails and Utilities At- tract Demand—Many Is- sues Undigested. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Sta NEW YORK, May 24.—For the first time in several weeks there were some signs today that bond prices were be- ginning to attract buyers. The insti- tutions are taking more interest in them, now that the average price has fallen over a point within a week. This applies chiefly to the better rails and public utilities. There is also good de- mand for tax-exempt issues around a 4 per cent basis. Some of the 4 per cent legal ralls that have been selling on a 4.10 basis have moved to a 4.20 per cent yleld. The 5 per cent bonds of the power and light companies, quoted in March and April from 102 to 104, are now avail- able between 100'¢ and 102. Rail Issues Reasonable. Various new rallroad 4'; per cent issues have come down to a level where they are for the first time regarded as reasonable in price. An illustration of this is to be found in the Frisco 4'4s, offered in March at 97 and unsold, with the syndicate buying back a fair amount, and today to be had at 93. Originally they gave a return of only 4.65 per cent, but now 4.85 per cent. The New Haven 4138 were once at 94%, but_have declined to 9115, ‘The market is quite full of undigested issues. It is understood that only about 20 per cent of the Province of Ontario $30.000,000 4 per cent bonds has becn moved. Varlous foreign obligations with a low return have been difficult to sell. There is as yet no evidence that the public has gone out of the stock market into bonds. Industrials Gain Ground. The industrials today gained grourd as stocks moved up. The copper com- any 7 per cent convertibles were about g points higher. Fractional gains oc- curred in the sugar and packing house issues. The automobile and tire bouds were heavy, as were some of the oils. A new low figure was reached on New York Railway adjustments, though some of the Interboroughs were firmer. ‘The foreign list was irregular. Itahan industrials ~ with arrants attached were strong. Elsewhere there was not much change. New loans were reported by the city of Berlin, whose borrowing will be with a 6 per cent coupon, in comparison with the original issue of 6158, now around par, and by a Ger- mnn public utility. BAKING FIRMS TO MERGE. NEW YORK, May 24 (#).—Columbia Baking Co. is being formed under laws of Delaware in the &lln for_consolida- tion of Southern Baking Co., Hexter Baking Co. and possibly other com- panies. The new company will have unthomed capital stock of 100,000 shares of $7 cumulmva first preferred, 100,000 shares of $7 second preferred and 100,000 shares of common stock, all no par value. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 24.— Speculative sentiment once more favored the buying side in today's operations on the Curb Exchange. The liquidation movement of early in the week was looked upon as sufficient to correct a top-heavy con- dition and to warrant resumption of buying. The turnover in Transcontinental Air Transport again Wwas enormous, the initial transaction alone involving a block of 10,000 shares up more than a point to 34%. The stock subsequently sold at its highest since listing, when it changed hands at 35. Announce- ment that Col, Lindbergh had become identified with affairs of the company was all that was needed fo stimulate activity. Other airplane issues were drawn into line, with Aero Supply class “A" and “B"” up 10 and 2 points, respective- ly, at intervals. Aluminum Co. Rises. Aluminum Co. of America, one of the high priced specialties, changed hands at 172, a gain of 5 points. New high records included a 5-point advance in U. S. Gypsum, more than 6 points in_Gobel, a point and more in Warner Bros. Pictures, and similor gains in Noranda Mines, Iron Cap Cop- per, Metropolitan 5 to 50 Cent Stores preferred and United Electric Coal. Strength of the mining shares gen- erally was predicted on the improve- ment in the market for the copper metal. The motor shares were not without feature, Auburn gaining 3 points to 133 on reports of increased shipments. A similar upturn was re- corded in Firestone Tire at 177. Merger Brings Advance. American Light & Traction was bid up sharply on intimation that plans were nearing completion for the ab- sorption of United Light & Power. The proposed combination is expected to bring together properties valued at $375,000,000. Plans for the consoli- dation are said to call for an exchange of one share of American Light & Trac- tion for each 10 shares of Uniteéd Light & Power class “A” Atlas Plywood, selling at its highest for all time, was responding to reports that the company had received a con- tract for the entire packing require- ments of the largest manufacturers of furniture in the country. Standard Oils were for the most part higher, but did nothing noteworthy. Darby Petroleum was taken up again among the independents. ON GIMBEL BOARD.
