74 *» THE EVENING STAR, HAZEN RE-ELECTED TOMILLER BOARD Reservations for Bankers’ Convention Above Total for 1927, Slaughter Says. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Melvin C. Hazen of Washington was re-elected a member of the board of directors of the Miller Train Control Corporation at the nineteenth annual meeting of the stockholders held at the head offices of the company in Staun- | terday. William M. du | Pont. jr. s made chairman of the executive board to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father last January Miller Train Control stock is largely held in Washington and many local sharcholders attended the meeting. Most of the remaining stock is held in Virginia, Maryland, New York and Delaware. An unusually large percent- age of the stock was represented at the meeting The officials reported the company to be in excellent financial condition and declared that prospects for future busi- ness are bright. Mr. Hazen, the Wash- ington director, is city surveyor and has served the company cpnbly for some years. Convention Outlook Bright. Lawrence A. Slaughter, vice president of the Commercial National Bank. and chairman of the transportation com- mittee for the District Bankers' Asso- ciation convention at Montauk Beach, reported today that reservations for the annual meeting are now ahead of the number received at the same time last year This indicates that the attend- ance will break all former records as last year's turnout at Hot Springs made a new record. As oniy about two weeks remain be- fore W. W. Spaid will call the con- vention to order, the remaining reser- vation requests must come in rapidly or the most desirable accommodations will be taken. A special attempt has been made this year to get more bank directors to attend the sessions and the drive is reported to be bearing fruit. Every one of the special committees have their work practically completed and the annual reports are almost ready. ton, NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE Received by Private Wire Direct to The Star Office. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 24. — Broadening out to include representatives of prac- tically every group, the upward move- ment on the Stock Exchange initiated Wednesday was carried further today. The high prices were reached in the last hour. The steel stocks were strong, which followers of the market interpreted favorably. Studebaker stood out among the independent motors, Radio and International Nickel among the special- ties, Consolidated Gas among the util- ities and General Electric among stand- ard industrials. Trading was more acttve than the day before. Opening prices were higher all around, outside buying orders hav- ing accumulated overnight. Profes- sional Wall Street was inclined to be skeptical about the advance going further immediately in view of the rapidity of the recovery, but the public | s was not so timid. Money Slightly Easier. Money renewed at 6 per cent un- changed. On the ontside, however, loans could be arranged at 5% per cent. Time funds were slightly casier in that the supply was more abuudant. This afternoon the weekly report on brokers’ loans will be given out by the Federal Reserve and the weekly bank statement will be available. The speculative com- munity was seemingly not concerned about these matters today. It was more interested in debating to what ex- tent the short interest had been reduced by the vigorous upswing wiich followed the break earlier in the week. Railroad stocks did better today. New York Central, after fluctuating un- certainly in the early trading, moved up briskly. Rock Islani was strong again and this time St. Louis-San Fran- cisco went along. Missouri-Pacific pre- ferred, Texas & Pacific and Kansas City Southern vere uthers more or less higher. In connection with the buying of New York Central it was reported that the expected new financing, sup- posedly ‘in the form of stock, would be announced next week. Studebaker was the leader of the in- dependent motors. It opened on a block of 15,000 shares at 80 up a point and 2 hall. Generz! Motors had to absorb heavy realizing after its spectac- ular run-up at the close Wednesday. In consequence the rrice sagged. United States Steel Taken Up. United States Steel, which had also failed to display early strength, was taken up around ncon and touching 146 was higher than at any time since last week. Bethlehem Stce' was next given attention, and Colorado Fuel, Ludlum and Central 'Allay, in both of which there was special buying, were strong all day. For a time the sugar stocks were in ac- tive demand under leadership of Ameri- can Sugar, which ran up over 2 points. Most of the Cuban sugar shares were higher, notably Cuban American. Im- provement in the market for raw sugar has been only moderate, but the sugar stocks are thoroughly deflated. Special moves were those in Collins and Alkman, due to short covering; In International Marcantile Marine pre- ferred, favorably influenced by the President signing the shipping bill, and in the International Telephone & Telegraph, A discordant roté was an- other new low for Western Union. Leadership sLifted about in the after- noon. Studebaker was still very strong, large blocks changing hi1is at the high of the day, but the real feature was In- ternational Nickel, which was at 97, up nearly five points on the day. COTTON EASES OFF IN TODAY’S TRADING look Outweighs Relative Steadi- ness at Liverpool. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 24.—The cotton vance of 1 point to a deciine of 6 points, | ing off to 20.73, or about 5 to 8 points | below yesterday's closing quotations on | the aciive positions. Some buying at the start on the rela- tively steady showing of Liverpool ap- peared to be outweighed by liquidation and selling for local or Southwestern ac- count, attributed to a favorable view of the weather outlook. Private cables said continental buying and trade calling had absorbed local liquidation in Liverpool and that a further fair business in cotton cloths was pending for China, but offers for India were impossible. Final liquidation of the May position sent the price about 12 points under July, but there was little business and trading in the current May contract ended at midday. July and later de- liveries eased off under a comparatively small volume of offerings prompted by the outlook for fair weather over the greater part of the South. July de- clined to 20.65, making a net loss of about 10 points. Prices were within 3 or 4 points of the lowest at midday.
