42 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSD. . ANNAPOLIS TO TURN TIVE BACKWARD Will Hark Back to Colonial Days When President Visits City on May 15. Special Dispatch to The Star, ANNAPOLIS, Md. March 15.—An- napolis on May 15 will become as far as possible the Annapolis of Colonial days, when President and Mrs. Cool- idge and many other dicnitaries will be guests of St. John's College. The governors of the thirteen original States have been invited. and it is hoped that all of them will be present. The presidential party will arrive about 8 o'clock in the afternoon. In the morning there will be athletic sports based upon those of 100 years ago, and boat races in the harbor, only the old types of boats being used. The President will be met on the outskirts of Annapolis by a committee headed by John Hays Hammond. The mayor will deliver an address of welcome on the outskirts of the city. The wel- come to the President and Mrs. Cool- idge will follow the plan carried out when George Washington came here from New York on his way to accept the Presidency of the United States, and also when he visited Annapolis to Tesign his commission. Tallyho to Make Run. A tallyho with four horses and out- riders to announce to Annapolis that the President and his lady are coming will be in readiness at the meeting place outside the cit A detachment of Maryland Caval precede this tallyho. in which President and Mrs, Coolidge will ride in the city, travel- ing by & more or less devious route to the old statehouse. where they will be met by Gov. Ritchie. In the old Senate Chamber they will be greeted by the governors of the thirteen original States, after which Gov. Ritchie will escort them on a tour of the state- house. Under the escort of the governors they will then go to the coach, waiting at the foot of the hill. It is planned to obtain an old Maryland coach for this purpose and to have a negro coachman. President and Mrs. Cool- idge will ride in the coach with Gov. Ritchie and the other governors will form an escort to McDowell Hall, which s where Washington went, after he re- signed his commission, to hold a pub- lic reception. When this reception is over. the presidential party will visit the | old houses owned by the college, which | will be explained to them by persons in the costume of the period. At the Hammond-Harwood House they will be met by impersonators of | Matthias Hammond and then lnlro-l duced to Mr. Butler, builder of the house. George Washington, Charles Carroll of Carroliton, Tench Tilghman, Mr. Paca and other Maryland celebri- ties will be seated about a table with their pipes and brandy. Descendants ©f some of these men will impersonate them and will wear costumes actually worn by their grandfathers. . | Children Plan Program. In the dining room “Matthias” will in- troduce the party to the wives of the Colonial gentlemen. In the ballroom & group of chiidren in Colonial cos- tume will present a quaint program of songs, etc. In the kitchen will be an old negro cook and a negro butler. “Mr. Hammond” will introduce the es to the President and “Mr. Butler” will explain the architecture of the house. A similar program will be observed at the Brice house. A Maryland supper will be served to. the presidential party in McDowell Hall, and after that the Colonial ball will be held. because it was there, in McDowell Hall, that Colonial balls | were given. Street criers, a May pole dance in the garden, and as many persons as possible in the costumes of the times on the street, all will give realism to the celebration. An effort will also be made to keep all automobiles off the streets along which the presidential coach will pass. RSN N A FARM OUTPUT DROPS. United States Economist Speaks Before Advertising Club. Because of the steady decrease in | sgricultural production in the past few | years farmers in all sections of the | country have been turning to the cities for employment, William J. Spillman, | agricuitural economist of the Depert~ | ment of Agriculture, told the Washing- | ton Advertising Club at its weekly luncheon in Harvey's Restaurant Tues- day. Speaking on “Present Business Condi- tions as Related to Agriculture” Mr. Spiliman declared that farm produc- tion has decreased from 20 to 40 per cent in all but two counties in the State of Virginia during the Jast year.
