STOCK LIST TURNS UPWARD AT CLOSE Short Covering Comes Into Market to Offset Some Early Losses. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatab to The Star. NEW YORK, February 4.—Through- out the greater part of today's short sionliquidation continued “to have s effect in the stock market. Margin ent out after the close of busi- s last night brought about a faiz amount of distress selling. But in the last half hour short covering came in in sufficient volume to more than offset the early losses in many directions. United States Steel, American Can and numerous other issues felt the ef- fect of this covering and sold above yesterday’s closing prices. The high prices of the day were reached just before the end. Steel Stocks Prominent. The steel stocks played a prominent part in the week end operations. What the Street viewed with concern was the continued pressure against United States, which dropped to a new low for the year before support was encoun- tered. Colorado Fuel was down more | than a point at intervals, and Crucible | and American Steel Foundry were af- fected by the selling. Vanadium again | proved the exception, and under the same character of buving noticeable during the past fow days was bid up | several points General Motors resisted the offerings beter than Steel common. but others of this group were lower. The January operating figures of General Motors, due shortly, are expected to disclose net income of slightly less than $12,000.- 000. as against $10,700,000 in the month of 192 Atlantic Refining Down. ‘The reassuring remarks concerning the future dividend policy by officials | of Atlantic Refining were not the fac- | tor they were yesterday. At 981; the price was down 1'; points, and there appeared to be plenty of offerings. Houston Oil broke some 2 points, while General Asphalt and the lower-priced | issues, like Sinclair, were discounting the prospects of unfavorable earnings statements for 1927. General Railway Signal was carried to a new low for the vear. Allied Chemical. Montgomery Wward and Radio Corporation were | prominent in the selling.
