Army desertions took another de- cided drop last year, due to greater care in picking men for the service. Figures for the fiscal year ended last June 30 given by Maj. Gen. Lutz Wahl, adjutant general, in his annual report, show that desertions resulted from 6.07 per cent of enlistment con- tracts in force, compared to 7.26 per cent the preceding 12 months. Subject of Long Study. “For several years the question of reducing the number of desertions has been the subject of constant study,” Gen. Wahl said, “and various plans looking to a betterment of existing conditions have been considered. Dur- ing the last fiscal year intelligence tests for recruits were introduced ex- ‘nerimvntml\ in each corps area in ad- | dition to other precautions enjoined upon recruiting personnel. “Greater care has been taken in the selection of recruits, with the result that the decrease in desertions noted for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1926, was more y\ronounrcd for the year ended June 30, 1927.” Reserve Corps Gains Shown. The report also shows a steady gain in recruitment of the Officers’ Reserve Corps from graduates of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. A total of 5319 was commissioned from that {source during the last fiscal year, bringing the strength of Reserves on June 30 up to 110,014. The training corps has provided 17,628 Reserve offi- cers during the last four years, 1,766 having bheen commissioned from ci- villan military training camp grad- uates. The training corps rose to a total of 325 units, with an aggregate en- roliment of 108,957 during the year. s A SKELETON DISCOVERY REVIVES SLAYING CASE Bones of Candy Store Owner, Miss- ing Six Years, Found in New Orleans.
